A Private Kendo Dojo in Chiba — 33㎡ Infused with a “Passion for Kendo”

To build a dedicated Kendo dojo within one’s own home is the ultimate honor and the highest luxury for anyone who pursues the path of Kendo. I myself could not help but be deeply moved by such profound dedication.

Recently, we were blessed with the opportunity to take charge of constructing the floor for a Kendo dojo in a private residence in Chiba Prefecture.

The space measures 7.3 meters by 4.6 meters, approximately 20 tatami mats (33 square meters) in size. It is the absolute ideal size for a single pair to practice, making it a magnificent dojo more than sufficient for spending highly concentrated and fulfilling hours of discipline.

In Kendo training, the floor is by no means a mere foothold. It firmly absorbs the impact of powerful fumikomi (striking steps) and reduces the burden on the swordsman’s knees and lower back. Furthermore, it directly affects the sharpness and quality of one’s techniques, making it an essential presence that can be called the “swordsman’s most reliable partner.”

Thankfully, in recent years, we have received numerous requests to build Kendo dojos in private homes, not only from within Japan but from all over the world.

However, crafting a dojo floor is never a simple task. It is not merely a matter of laying down cedar boards; to maximize the natural elasticity and durability of the wood, rigorous material selection and meticulous design are absolutely essential.

The surface of the dojo floor has been treated with a “kanna” (hand plane) finish by our master craftsmen. Unlike sanding with paper, the wood surface finished with a hand plane creates a smooth texture that feels as if it gently adheres to the soles of the feet. This optimizes the glide for suriashi (sliding steps)—the most critical footwork in Kendo—firmly supporting delicate foot movements.

Although made of solid wood, the Kendo dojo floors we construct are designed in accordance with the strict standards of JIS A 6519 (Japanese Industrial Standards). We firmly believe that it is not just the superficial beauty or the comfortable feel of the kanna finish, but the undeniable “performance” capable of withstanding years of rigorous training that proves it to be a true dojo floor.

The moment the construction was successfully completed and I stepped into the brand-new dojo, I was enveloped by the refreshing scent of the carefully selected domestic cedar and the dignified atmosphere unique to a dojo, which naturally made me straighten my own posture.

I can already envision the countless rigorous practice sessions that will take place on this floor in the future, and the sight of many swordsmen eventually gathering here to hone their skills together. I have no doubt that this wonderful space will carve out a solid history in the client’s Kendo journey, and perhaps within the local community, as a true “Tiger’s Den” (a place of strict yet warm discipline) for the future.

As a craftsman involved in building dojos, I express my deepest respect for the extraordinary determination and action of the client, who elevated a space in their home from a mere living area to a “place of ascetic practice” where they can refine themselves and elevate one another with their peers.

Going forward, I sincerely pray that you will devote yourself to your training to your heart’s content, together with this new floor.

千葉県の個人住宅内に剣道場を施工。約20畳の空間に込めた「剣道への想い」を形にする

ご自宅に専用の剣道場を構えられるということは、剣道を志す者にとってこれ以上ないほどの誉れであり、至高の贅沢かと存じます。私自身、そのお志に深い感銘を受けずにはいられませんでした。

この度、千葉県の個人邸におきまして、剣道場床の施工を担当させていただくご縁に恵まれました。
広さは7.3ｍ×4.6ｍ、およそ20畳（33㎡）の空間です。1組でのお稽古にはまさに理想的な広さであり、非常に密度の濃い、充実した修練の時間を過ごしていただくには十分すぎるほどの立派な道場となっております。

剣道のお稽古におきまして、床は決して単なる足場ではございません。力強い踏み込みの衝撃をしっかりと吸収し、剣士の膝や腰への負担を軽減することはもちろんのこと、技の冴えや質にも直結する、いわば「剣士の最も頼れる相棒」とも言える重要な存在です。

ありがたいことに、近年は個人邸に剣道場を設けたいというご要望を、日本国内にとどまらず世界中から数多く頂戴しております。
しかしながら、剣道場の床づくりは決して一筋縄でいくものではございません。単に杉材を張れば良いというわけではなく、木材本来が持つ弾力性や耐久性を最大限に引き出すためには、厳密な素材選びと緻密な設計が不可欠です。

道場床の表面には、熟練の職人による「カンナ仕上げ」を施しております。ペーパー（紙やすり）で仕上げるのとは異なり、カンナで仕上げた木肌は、足裏にしっとりと吸い付くような滑らかな感触を生み出します。これにより、剣道において最も重要とされる「摺り足」の滑り具合が最適な状態となり、繊細な足捌きをしっかりとサポートいたします。

私どもが手掛ける剣道場床は、無垢の木造でありながら、JIS A 6519（日本産業規格）の厳しい基準に準じた設計を行っております。表面的な美しさやカンナ仕上げの心地よさのみならず、長年にわたる激しいお稽古にも耐えうる確かな「性能」こそが、真の道場床である証だと確信しております。

無事に施工が完了し、真新しい道場に足を踏み入れた瞬間、厳選された国産杉材が醸し出す清々しい香りと、道場特有の凛とした空気に包まれ、私自身も思わず背筋が伸びる思いがいたしました。

これから先、この床で幾度となく激しいお稽古が重ねられ、やがてここへ多くの剣士たちが集い、切磋琢磨する光景が目に浮かぶようです。この素晴らしい空間が、お施主様の剣道人生において、あるいは地域において、まさに未来の「虎の穴（厳しくも温かい修練の場）」として確かな歴史を刻んでいくことと存じます。

ご自宅の空間を、単なる居住の場としてだけでなく、ご自身を磨き、お仲間と共に高め合う「修行の場」へと昇華されたお施主様の並々ならぬご決断と行動力に対し、道場づくりに携わる一人の職人として、心より深く敬意を表します。

これからは、この新しい床と共に、どうか心ゆくまでお稽古に励まれますことを祈念しております。

The Completion of Jigokuden Kendo Dojo in Uji, Kyoto
A Dojo Founded by Professor Alexander Bennett

The founder and director of the dojo is Professor Alexander Bennett.

Originally from New Zealand, Professor Bennett is a martial artist and researcher who has devoted many years to the study of Japanese martial arts and continues to share their value with people around the world.

He is well versed in Japanese martial arts such as kendo, iaido, and naginata. As a professor at Kansai University, he is engaged in education and research, while also continuing to communicate the cultural significance of Japanese martial arts to an international audience.

Jigokuden is a dojo established by Professor Bennett in a quiet area of Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, surrounded by terraced rice fields.

Measuring 10m by 10m, it is a spacious private dojo, yet it has a calm presence that harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Rather than feeling like a simple training hall, it gives the impression of a place dedicated to learning, reflection, and the transmission of martial arts culture.

On this occasion, Kendojo Flooring Workshop, operated by Gokan Co., Ltd., was entrusted with the flooring work for Jigokuden Kendojo.

A kendo dojo floor is not simply a matter of being flat and hard.

It must have the elasticity to absorb the impact of fumikomi footwork, the appropriate surface grip and glide to support smooth movement, and the comfort needed to protect the body during long hours of training.

Only when these elements come together can kendo practitioners train with confidence and peace of mind.

We are deeply honored to have installed a kendo dojo floor made from Japanese wood and crafted with the skills of Japanese artisans for Professor Bennett, who has dedicated himself to sharing Japanese martial arts with the world.

We sincerely hope that Jigokuden will become a place of learning for many kendo practitioners, as well as a hub for sharing Japanese martial arts culture with the world.

To support the feet of a teacher who shares martial arts with the world, using Japanese wood.

For us as lumber merchants, this was a deeply meaningful project.

そのベネット先生が、京都府宇治市の棚田に囲まれた静かな地に構えられた道場が「自極殿」です。

10m×10mという個人道場としては大きな空間でありながら、周囲の風景と調和した、落ち着きのある佇まい。
単なる稽古場というよりも、武道を学び、考え、伝えていくための場であるように感じられます。

このたび、剣道場床建築工房・株式会社五感では、自極殿剣道場の床工事を担当させていただきました。

剣道場の床は、ただ平らで硬ければよいというものではありません。
踏み込みを受け止める弾力、足さばきを妨げない滑り具合、長く稽古を続けるための身体へのやさしさ。
それらが揃ってはじめて、剣士が安心して稽古に向き合うことができます。

日本の武道を世界へ伝えてこられたベネット先生の道場に、日本の木と、日本の職人の技術による剣道場床を納めさせていただけたことを、大変光栄に思います。

自極殿が、これから多くの剣士にとって学びの場となり、また日本武道文化を世界へ伝える拠点となっていくことを心より願っております。

Construction of the kendo dojo floor at “Jigokuden” in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, is proceeding smoothly.

Jigokuden has adopted our patented elastic kendo dojo flooring method.

Combining the suppleness of cedar wood with the moderate elasticity of rubber cushions,
this floor structure firmly supports the kendo practitioners’ legs and lower bodies with the gentle properties of both wood and rubber.

Furthermore, although our kendo dojo flooring is made of wood, we conduct various performance tests in accordance with JIS A 6519, “Steel Subfloor Components for Gymnasiums.”

Specifically, we perform performance verification in accordance with major test items relevant to general gymnasiums, kendo dojos, and jujitsu/kendo dojos, including:

As stipulated in JIS A 6519:
9.2 Vertical Load Test
9.3 Repeated Impact Test
9.4 Floor Elasticity Test
9.5 Floor Cushioning Test
9.6 Floor Hardness Test

We verify performance in accordance with these and other major test items relevant to general gymnasiums, kendo dojos, and jujitsu/kendo dojos.

The fact that we possess test data compliant with JIS A 6519 despite our kendo dojo floors being wooden
is a major strength of our kendo dojo flooring construction method.

We believe there are likely very few companies other than ours that have verified the performance of wooden kendo dojo floors at this level and maintain such test data.

Rather than relying solely on intuition or experience,
we thoroughly verify the floor’s elasticity, shock absorption, and hardness to protect the kendo practitioners’ bodies.

That is our fundamental approach to constructing kendo dojo floors.

Completion is just around the corner.
We will remain focused until the very end and finish the work with the utmost care.

京都府宇治市『自極殿 -Jigokuden-』の剣道場床工事が、順調に進んでおります。

自極殿では、当社が特許を取得している弾性剣道場床工法を採用いただいております。
杉材のしなやかさと、ゴムクッションによる適度な弾性。
木とゴム、それぞれの優しさで、剣士の足腰をしっかりと支える床構造です。

そして当社の剣道場床は、木造床でありながら、JIS A 6519「体育館用鋼製床下地構成材」に準じた各種性能試験を実施しており、すべての試験項目において基準内に収まっております。

木造の剣道場床でありながら、JIS A 6519に準じた試験データを保有し、なおかつ全試験項目で基準内に収まっていること。
これは、当社の剣道場床工法における大きな強みです。

おそらく、このレベルで木造剣道場床の性能を数値で確認し、試験データとして保有している会社は、当社以外にはほとんどないのではないかと考えております。

感覚や経験だけに頼るのではなく、剣士の身体を守るために、床の弾性・衝撃吸収性・硬さをきちんと確認する。
それが、当社の剣道場床づくりにおける基本姿勢です。

We were commissioned to install the flooring for the kendo dojo at “Jigokuden” in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture.
It is an incredibly impressive kendo dojo with a floor area of 100 square meters.
Professor Alexander Bennett of Kansai University, a kendo practitioner active on the international stage, had been carefully considering the location and flooring method for the dojo for some time.
We are deeply grateful for this opportunity.

The purpose of my visit is to attend the 122nd All Japan Kendo Enbu Taikai.
