International Shorin-Ryu Kiyobukan

International Shorin-Ryu Kiyobukan The Kiyobukan Association was founded in 2007 by Hanshi, 10th Dan, Seiei Nakaza of to preserve the legacy Okinawan Shorin-Ryu KIYOBUKAN. and Canada.

Matsumura--Itosu--Chibana--Nakazato--Nakaza. This is our Kobayashi lineage. This site is designed for members and non-members as a bulletin board for different events to include: traditional tournaments, seminars, camps, pictures and video sharing. Brief History: Hanshi Nakaza, Seiei was taught and promoted by Hanshi Nakazato, Shugoro of the Shorinkan Kyokai. In 2007, Hanshi Nakaza officially resi

gned his position as the Vice-Board of Directors along with his membership in the Shorinkan to form his own association, know as the Kiyobukan (Hall of the True Warrior). In 2009, Nakaza promoted Brian Hobson to 7th dan and appointed him as the Director of the U.S. Currently we have 10 dojos (Okinawa-1, USA-6 & Canada-2 and South Africa-1) registered as official Kiyobukan members and several more looking to gain full memebrship. In 2013, Nakaza Sensei, promoted Brian to 8th Dan inaddition to the new position as So-Honbucho (Executive Director). Later in 2013, regretfully, Nakaza Sensei passed away. His final instruction was to promote Brian Hobson to 9th Dan-Hanshi and the sole heir to the Kiyobukan Association. If interested in membership, contact Brian Hobson via facebook messenger.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲

To be part of Kiyobukan is a responsibility.

What you learn is not yours alone—it has been entrusted to you.

Through your effort, your discipline, your attitude…you represent the art, your teachers, and your dojo.

Train with that awareness.

For the first time, the head of Kiyobukan has set foot on South African soil…and what a moment it has been.

To stand together in the dojo—different countries, different backgrounds—
yet moving as one, guided by the same traditions, the same spirit…

It is something truly special.

What began years ago has now travelled far and wide, reaching new shores, new students, new families—yet the heart of Kiyobukan remains unchanged.

Seeing the connection between teacher and student, across continents, across cultures…reminds us that this art is alive.

This visit is more than a milestone. It is a reminder:

Kiyobukan is not limited by distance. It lives wherever its spirit is carried.

From Okinawa… to South Africa… and beyond—we are one family.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲

Every black belt once stood at the edge of the dojo… unsure, nervous, and inexperienced.

What made the difference?

They stepped forward.
They kept showing up.
They refused to quit.

If you’re at the beginning—take heart.
You’re exactly where you need to be.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗶𝘆𝗼𝗯𝘂𝗸𝗮𝗻

Karate doesn’t end when you leave the dojo.

It follows you into your daily life—in how you speak, how you act, how you respond.

Calm under pressure.
Respect in all situations.
Control in moments of tension.

𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

No applause.
No spotlight.
Just repetition.

Again… and again… and again.

The real work of karate happens in the quiet moments—when no one is watching, and you choose not to give up.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗷𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱

No matter where you are in the world—if you step into a Kiyobukan dojo, you are not alone.

Different languages. Different cultures.
But the same bow. The same respect. The same path.

We are connected through training, through struggle, through growth.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲

Behind every movement is intention, awareness, and spirit.

In Kiyobukan, we don’t chase perfection—we pursue meaning in every technique.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆

The hardest battles are not fought with fists. They are fought within.

Doubt. Fear. Ego. Frustration.

Karate teaches us to face all of it—with patience, humility, and discipline.

In time, you comprehend the importance of the Budo Spirit - not only gaining knowledge on how to defend yourself, but in the end cultivating a better understanding of yourself.

𝗔 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

What we practice has been carried hand to hand, teacher to student, across generations.

Every stance, every kata, every correction…is part of something much bigger than ourselves.

When you train, you honor those who came before you—and you carry it forward for those yet to come.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

There are days when your body aches…
When your legs feel heavy…
When your spirit is tested.

And still—you bow in, and you train.

Because in Kiyobukan, we understand something deeper:
we don’t train because it’s easy… we train because it shapes who we become.
