If you are grieving, may you find comfort here:

For Grief | John O’Donohue

When you lose someone you love,
Your life becomes strange,
The ground beneath you gets fragile,
Your thoughts make your eyes unsure;
And some dead echo drags your voice down
Where words have no confidence.

Your heart has grown heavy with loss;
And though this loss has wounded others too,
No one knows what has been taken from you
When the silence of absence deepens.

Flickers of guilt kindle regret
For all that was left unsaid or undone.

There are days when you wake up happy;
Again inside the fullness of life,
Until the moment breaks
And you are thrown back
Onto the black tide of loss.

Days when you have your heart back,
You are able to function well
Until in the middle of work or encounter,
Suddenly with no warning,
You are ambushed by grief.

It becomes hard to trust yourself.
All you can depend on now is that
Sorrow will remain faithful to itself.
More than you, it knows its way
And will find the right time
To pull and pull the rope of grief
Until that coiled hill of tears
Has reduced to its last drop.

Gradually, you will learn acquaintance
With the invisible form of your departed;
And, when the work of grief is done,
The wound of loss will heal
And you will have learned
To wean your eyes
From that gap in the air
And be able to enter the hearth
In your soul where your loved one
Has awaited your return
All the time.

I love these words from Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the hospice movement.

They inspire the questions that we,as doulas, love to ask our clients. Not what is the matter with you, but what matters TO you and WHO matters to you?

These words from Dame Cicely Saunders remain at the heart of compassionate end-of-life care.

Every person deserves choice, comfort and support at the end of life regardless of circumstance.

Our members support people through uncertainty, grief, practical planning and emotional overwhelm, creating space for comfort at the end-of-life.

If you feel you, or someone important to you, would benefit from the support of an end of life doula, please get in touch via the contact form on our website. We will get back in touch with you shortly after to discuss how we can help.

Hello, and welcome.

I'm Susan Telford. I live in Annan, beside the Solway Firth, and my work is about accompanying people through life's transitions, especially the last one we all meet.

I'm an end of life doula and an independent funeral celebrant. As part of my doula work I offer advance planning: the gentle, practical conversations about your wishes that families so often leave until it's too late. I host Annan Death Café on the last Tuesday of each month at Kate's Kitchen, a warm and open space to talk about death and dying over tea and cake. No agenda, everyone welcome.

I also write Slowing Down to the Speed of Grace, weekly reflections on Substack.

If any of this speaks to you, whether you're planning ahead, facing a diagnosis, supporting someone you love, or grieving, do get in touch. There's no obligation and no pressure.

First garden yoga of the year! 😀🧘‍♀️

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn.

Slowing down to the speed of grace looks a lot like this: purple flowers, a sleeping Snoopy, and a chalkboard reminding you that happiness is here, now.
