Paul Gascoigne was England's breakout star of the 1990 World Cup. The 23-year-old went into the tournament without a start to his name but with his creativity and lack of fear, had become indispensable following the conclusion of Italia '90.

His performances - as well as the tears - spawned 'Gazzamania' in the UK as the Geordie's popularity transcended sports. He even released a cover of Lindisfarne's "Fog on the Tyne" that reached no.2 in the singles chart with Terry Wogan claiming. "he was probably the MOST popular man in the UK".

Former England Captain later claimed that 'Gazza' was the "best player" he had ever played with, saying that in 1990 he "was challenging Maradona as the best player in the world at that time."
