Sailing Europa "To reach a port, we must sail - sail, not tie at anchor - sail, not drift." (Franklin D. Roosevelt)

Two guys and their friends sailing in Mediterranean Sea on EUROPA, an Alubat OVNI 32 sailing boat.

“The boat is safer anchored at the port, but that is not the aim of (Alubat Ovni) boats.” ⛵️

Circumnavigation of Sicily has been our dream since our big Mediterranean Odyssey in 2018, but due to the pandemic we only fulfilled it this summer. We’ve finally achieved it in 24 days after sailing 550 nautical miles (cca 1000km) at average speed of 4,5 knots. With 17 different stops, including 11 anchorages and 8 towns visited, we discovered a big part of this largest island in the Mediterranean. Apart of enjoying the liveliness of Ortigia, Taormina or Cefalu, and wilderness of Vulcano or Favignana, we also found Sicilian ‘pearls’ like the little fishing harbour of Marzamemi or monumental ancient Greek temples in Selinunte and Agrigento. Our trip was flavoured with tasty local fruits, herbs and vegetables, excellent fresh seafood and pasta, and we now better understand the Sicilian way of cooking and living. Heading back to Brussels, we will soon start thinking of our next adventures⛵️ Stay tuned.

There are at least a thousand reasons to visit Sicily, the great island – indeed the largest in the Mediterranean – that forms the triangular football to the boot that is the Italian peninsula. They are all very good reasons, including amazing landscapes, a uniquely complex and delicious cuisine, a history that is diverse and multifaceted beyond belief, excellent wines, a vast array of archaeological sites, an even vaster one of historical towns and villages. But one key reason to visit the island is missing from the list above: Greek temples!

Last city we visited in Sicily was Agrigento.

Selinunte was a total surprise we discovered on our way to Porto Palo where we initially planned to make a stopover after sailing the whole day. We anchored on a beach just below these georgeous ancient Greek temples 🏛 from 5th-6th cent. BC, took our dinghy and went up for a sunset walk.

One never gets enough of these magic sunsets ⛵️

After a night at anchor next to the lighthouse of San Vito Lo Capo, we refilled our diesel tank (we wish there was more wind) and continued to the Egadi Island of Favignana. #

Palermo, the capital of Sicily, with its 295 churches and 70 palaces, breathes history, beauty of architecture and gastronomy at every corner. It was definitely worth of visiting.

Nothing captures Sicily better than this video taken tonight in a random restaurant we choose for a dinner. As for my protocol career, I learned a new Italian toast: “A sesso e à successo!” ❤️

Cefalu was an exceptionally nice surprise on our sailing trip around Sicily. An authentic, pleasant and very photogenic city. Anchoring in sandy bottom right in front of the old town, swimming in a crystal clear water and reaching the city by dinghy was easy and quite funny.

What a beautiful night, waiting for Perzeids.
