The sole of the new shoes is made up of 50% devulcanized rubber, obtained from Scarpa's production waste.

Devulcanization consists of breaking the chemical bonds that make rubber solid, in order to make it workable and recyclable again for producing new rubber.

Separating the different components of a shoe is no easy task.

Our partner Conceria Sciarada, through a process called hydrolysis, separates the upper part of the shoe from the sole. The leather 'melts' into a liquid/filler that is then used to tan the new leather. From here, we can then proceed with recycling the remaining components.
