The relationship between the Jewish and the Persian people goes back more than 2,500 years.

From a Jewish perspective, it is first recorded in the Book of Isaiah, where the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great is named explicitly. After the destruction of the First Temple and the exile of Judah by the Babylonians, Cyrus, allowed the Jews to return to our indigenous land and supported the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.

This is not symbolic. Cyrus is described directly as God’s chosen instrument, appointed to restore Jerusalem and enable the return of the exiles. That alone is extraordinary. Like much of the Tanakh, this relationship records real historical events. And 2,500 years later, it still matters.

In contemporary times, after October 7, the Iranian people stood shoulder to shoulder with the Jews. Today, in their hour of courage and defiance, the Jewish people stand with them.

Both of our national symbols are lions. One day, they will roar together again in a new Middle East.

The Iranian diaspora spans the globe, shaped by decades of political upheaval, social change, and migration. Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, successive waves of Iranians have left the country, forming vibrant communities far beyond Iran’s borders.

Today, more than 4 million people of Iranian origin live abroad. Over one million reside in the United States, while significant populations are found in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Israel, and Turkey. Many others live across Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia, reflecting both recent migration and much older historical ties.

Together, these communities have become an influential global diaspora, preserving Iranian culture, language and identity while deeply contributing to the societies they now call home.
