Skin Chafing is one of the most common problem faced by athletes and sadly it is not spoken about much due to embarrassments. Today I am here to explain what it is and how can you prevent it.
What is Skin Chafing?
“ Friction can lead to weakening or wearing away of the skin. This is known as chafing” . The friction can either be skin rubbing against skin or fabric rubbing against skin.
Skin -on-skin: when your skin rubs against another skin surface and the friction leads to causing chafing. For instance:: your thighs or your underarms.
Skin- on- fabric: when your damp skin rubs against a fabric and the constant friction leads to chafing. For instance: shirt/ sports bra or shorts lining rubbing against your body parts.
Usual sites of Skin chafing:
• Inner thighs
• Glutes or buttocks
• Breasts
• Ni***es
• Underarms
Few Images of skin Chafing are attached below for you to have a better understanding. The next time you see someone facing this problem, don’t make them feel embarrassed instead help them prevent it efficiently.
How to prevent skin chafing?
• Apply moisturizer/ coconut oil/ Vaseline to your private areas before wearing the cloths.
• Wear dry fit cloths
• Avoid wearing new T shirts before wash ( wash it before use).
How to Treat chafing?
The best way to treat is:
• To leave the part open and airy.
• Avoid wearing compressing cloths.
• Moisturize the part at frequent intervals.
• Have a balanced and nutritious diet.
• Avoid heavy training for 2-3 days.
It usually heals within 2-3 days, however if your skin Bruce is not healing or in coupled with itching, you might need to take anti-fungal cream after checking with your GP.
Remember! You will have experienced this at least once in your athletic journey but it might be new for many people who are new to the process.
Lets put an end to the hesitation and talk about it.
