How can cooperatives use AI and digital tools to work smarter, communicate better and make better use of their data?

At the Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit 5.0, participants got to explore these questions through a highly practical Capacity Building Session facilitated by Jimmy Boey Wai Keong, Board Member and Trainer at Singapore Professionals’ and Executives’ Co-operative Limited (SPEC).

Rather than simply discussing AI, participants got hands-on with tools and exercises covering AI chatbots, data cleaning, data dashboards and other AI-enabled applications.

The session encouraged participants to experiment, learn by doing and think about how these technologies can be applied to real needs within cooperatives.

For young cooperative leaders, digital literacy is increasingly becoming an essential part of building organisations that are innovative, responsive and ready for the future.

A great example of learning through participation, experimentation and collaboration at .

From ideas to action: Young people put cooperation into practice

What happens when young people from different countries, regions and backgrounds are given a challenge and asked to build a cooperative together?

They start talking. They listen. They negotiate. They build.

At the Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit 5.0, Capacity Building Session 2, “Start, Scale, Cooperate: The Start-up Journey”, led by Rayann Koudaih, Technical Specialist, Cooperative, Social and Solidarity Economy at the International Labour Organization, participants stepped into the role of cooperative entrepreneurs through an interactive simulation.

Working across 7 groups and different sectors, participants first created their own cooperative by identifying a common need, defining their members, developing a product or service, identifying their customers and exploring the benefits of working together.

Then came the surprises.

As their cooperatives evolved, groups had to respond to challenges around growing with rising demand, finding the resources needed to scale, and keeping the cooperative truly member-owned and democratically controlled as it grew.

Each group then presented a 90-second pitch, telling the story of their cooperative, from the problem they wanted to solve to how they would grow while keeping members at the centre.

Perhaps the most valuable part was not just the pitches, but what happened around the tables.

Young people who had come from different countries, regions and linguistic backgrounds began working together, exchanging ideas, making decisions and finding common ground.

Across sectors and borders, the challenges were surprisingly similar.

It was cooperation in action: participatory, practical and built around the principle of working together to create value.
