Ride to Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer
*Sunday 31st Oct 2021*
*05:30 AM to 09:00 AM*
Cancers are the second commonest cause of death in Indian society today and their incidence is increasing steadily. Promotion and preservation of women's health is, therefore, a crucial public health necessity, like their health, or lack of it has a deep impact on the wellbeing of the family and society. Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in Indian women and is an imminently curable cancer, provided patients are diagnosed at an early stage and receive timely and comprehensive treatment. Sadly, due to a lack of awareness and public health initiatives for early-stage detection of breast cancer, many women in India are diagnosed with these cancers in an advanced stage, making them difficult and expensive to treat and cure. Hence, creating awareness about these common cancers and ensuring their detection at an early stage are the needs of the hour for our country.
October is observed as "International breast cancer awareness month". SGPGI Breast Health Programme and doctors from the departments of Endocrine & Breast Surgery, and radiation oncology have been undertaking several activities for raising awareness about breast cancer and emphasizing the need for breast cancer screening and early diagnosis over the last two decades. These efforts, along with the efforts of many other organizations and governments have borne fruit, and there is a shift towards a higher proportion of early-stage, curable breast cancers being diagnosed,
compared to some time ago. However, the journey has just begun, and even today, a substantial proportion, about 40% of breast cancer patients that are treated at SGPGI are in stages III and IV.
On Sunday 31" Oct 2021, the SGPGI community will come together to carry out activities to attract the attention of lay people towards the need for breast cancer awareness and breast cancer screening.
To this goal, we invite the "Pedalyatri" to do a "Ride To Raise Awareness Of Breast Cancer" (R-T-R
ABC) on the morning of Sunday 31" Oct, riding through prominent locations of Lucknow city. Efforts are on to have the ride flagged off by the Honourable Governor of UP from Raj Bhavan. The ride will end in the SGPGI campus, at our Hobby Centre, where all cyclists will be felicitated by the Director of SGPGI.
