Is your politeness actually killing your authority? 📉
In corporate communication, there is a fine line between being polite and sounding subservient. When you over-apologize for small things—like a late reply or asking a question—you are subconsciously signaling to your team and your bosses that your time is less valuable than theirs. This is a classic low-status behavior that kills leadership potential.
The Psychology:
Every time you say “Sorry,” you are introducing a debt. You are saying, “I owe you.”
When you switch to “Thank You,” you flip the script. You are expressing gratitude.
• “Sorry I’m late” = I messed up (Focus on negative).
• “Thank you for waiting” = You are patient (Focus on positive).
The Fix:
Next time you draft an email, do a quick “Ctrl+F” for the S-word.
❌ “Sorry to bother you.”
✅ “Do you have a moment?”
❌ “Sorry for the delay.”
✅ “Thanks for your patience.”
