𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁.
Think about what could make an investor say "No" to your startup.
So before you decide how much to raise, ask:
“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?”
Then ask:
“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸?”
That's the milestone your funding should help you achieve.
Because when you return to investors for your next round, they're going to ask:
“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?”
The strongest answer isn't:
“𝗪𝗲'𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲.”
It's:
“𝗪𝗲'𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.”
If you need clarity on what milestone your funding should target, 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗼.
