NO ADDED SUGAR AUDIT SERIES | VIDEO #3

Today’s product: Farmley Date Bites Classic Delight.

The pack carries a “NO ADDED SUGAR” claim.

But take a look at the label.

Ingredients: Dates, Almonds, Cashew Nuts, Pistachios, Ghee, Honey.

Total Sugars: 33.7g per 100g.

Now let’s look at what FSSAI says.

A “No Added Sugar” claim can only be made if “no sugars of any type have been added to the food” and FSSAI specifically lists honey as an example.

FSSAI also states that foods containing ingredients that substitute for added sugars, such as dried fruit paste, should not carry a “No Added Sugar” claim.

So here’s the question:

When dates are the first ingredient and honey is also added, on what basis is this “NO ADDED SUGAR” claim being used?

This reel is not about product quality.

This is about label accuracy and consumer transparency.



Consumers deserve clear and compliant food labels.

If you think Bajaj Almond Drops and Dabur Almond Hair Oil are just almond oil, here are 3 things you should know:

1️⃣ About 77% of the formulation is Light Liquid Paraffin (Mineral Oil). Almond oil is part of a 21% oil blend, but the exact almond oil percentage is not disclosed on the label.

2️⃣ The formulations contain TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone), an antioxidant added to help prevent the oils from becoming rancid and improve shelf life. They also contain added fragrance.

3️⃣ They contain added colours (CI 47000 and CI 26100), which are used to give the oil its characteristic colour and appearance.

Always flip the bottle and read the ingredient list. The front label tells you what the product is called. The ingredient list tells you what’s actually inside.

Every time someone compares fruit juices sold in India versus abroad, I hear the same thing:

“Why does their juice contain only fruit while ours contains water, sugar, flavours and additives?”

That’s a fair question.

But here’s another question:

Are we comparing products at the same price point?

A litre of apple juice requires a lot of apples.

A litre of orange juice requires a lot of oranges.

A litre of pomegranate juice requires a lot of pomegranates.

Fruit is expensive. Processing, packaging, transportation and storage add further costs.

Today, there are brands in India selling juices made entirely from fruit without added sugar, colours or preservatives.

But when those products are priced significantly higher, many consumers immediately say:

“Too expensive.”

So what do we really want?

A ₹70 juice pack?

Or a true 100% fruit juice made entirely from fruit, even if it costs substantially more?

This is not about defending any brand.

It’s about asking whether we are willing to pay the real cost of a product before comparing it with products sold in other countries.

When we compare Indian products with products sold abroad, should we compare only the ingredient list?

Or should we also compare the price?

NO ADDED SUGAR AUDIT SERIES | EPISODE 2

Today we’re looking at Happilo Date Bites Zesty Orange.

The front of the pack carries a “No Added Sugar” claim.

However, the ingredient list declares:

• Dates
• Honey

FSSAI’s Advertising and Claims Regulations state that for a “No Added Sugar” claim:

• No sugars of any type have been added to the food (examples include honey)

• The food should not contain ingredients containing sugars that substitute for added sugars

The ingredient list and the relevant FSSAI regulation are shown in this video.

Based on the ingredient list and the regulation reproduced above, I am seeking clarification from Happilo and FSSAI:

Is the “No Added Sugar” claim on this product compliant with the current regulations?

Consumers deserve clear, honest and transparent food labels so they can make informed choices.

Both sit in the same freezer.
Both look similar.

But one is made with vegetable oils, while the other is made with milk fat.

Next time you pick up a tub, don’t just read the flavour. Read the category.

And remember, whether it’s Frozen Dessert or Ice Cream, enjoy it in moderation once in a while.

I joined the panel on ET Now Swadesh to discuss a topic that affects every Indian consumer:

Healthy food ke naam par unhealthy marketing.

Many packaged food brands don’t just sell products. They sell a perception of health.

🔹 Oat cookies that highlight oats on the front but are often loaded with maida, sugar and palm oil.

🔹 “100% Whole Wheat” breads that may contain maida, caramel colour and multiple additives.

🔹 Fruit drinks that showcase fruits, vitamins and minerals on the front, while the ingredient list tells a very different story.

In May 2025, FSSAI issued an advisory stating that the use of the term “100%” on packaged foods is not permitted because the term is undefined and can mislead consumers. Yet even today, such claims continue to appear on many products.

My message remains simple:

Don’t buy the front of the pack. Read the back of the pack.

A viral video from the RR vs SRH IPL Eliminator at New Chandigarh shows water coolers allegedly not working, while spectators were allegedly charged ₹20 for a glass of water and ₹150 for a 1 litre water bottle carrying an MRP of ₹20.

I understand security restrictions on carrying water bottles. But if that is the case, functional drinking water facilities must be available.

Water is a necessity, not a luxury. Profiteering from people’s thirst is unacceptable.
