Town Club was started with the object of playing CRICKET only. Therefore the age of cricket in this district can be counted back from the year 1883,but this cricke
t saw a fissure when MR.WHEELER,Professor of Hooghly College, introduced football at chinsurah and it was accepted by Town Club. The club then suffered from some lean years, but with efforts of Rev.McCullah,in 1898 and subsequently by Mr. District Magistrate, the Club recieved meritorious recognition by the executive authorities here. The Club was then accorded a status of the premier athletic club of bengal outside Kolkata, at that time. The club played many football encounters with Army teams from Barrackpore and Calcutta with a satisfactory standard of play. TOWN CLUB created history in 1905, to be the FIRST native Club to qualify and play the I.F.A. SHIELD and reached the semi-finals, but unfortunately it went down to Dalhousie who won the I.F.A. SHIELD that year.Town Club's performance was higher than Dalhousie's but for ill-luck it suffered defeat. Town Club's success in Football provided it with an ambition to enter the I.F.A.Shield for 7 times from 1905 and lastly in 1917. The Club introduced Rugby Football at chinsurah but was not successful in the then sports cirle. In 1912, the Club introduced Hockey amongst its members and hockey was taken up by D.S.A. BERNARD, Commissioner of Burdwn Division and PRESIDENT of the Club Died. The Club introduced a beautiful and a big Silver Cup in his memory as a challenge cup in football in 1916. Under the presidentship of Mr. Mcpherson, I.C.S. District Judge, the club made remarkable improvement in its activities. Town Club played the Local Football League too well from 1923 onwards.
