Three-way title drama as disrupted S-League 'A' Division heads to October 1 decider
The S-League ‘A’ Division title, along with qualification for two prestigious national competitions, hangs in the balance following a campaign disrupted by severe logistical setbacks. League leaders Aakraman SC had an opportunity to wrap up the championship yesterday, but were held to a 2–2 draw by Sikkim Police FT despite a strong second-half effort.
Aakraman SC spent the majority of the season at the top of the ten-team table. However, their lead began to unravel following a mid-season defeat to Gangtok Himalayan SC, before a subsequent loss to Sikkim Brotherhood FC allowed Sikkim Police FT to lead the title race.
The tournament, originally scheduled to run from June through July, faced significant delays and was ultimately shortened after several clubs withdrew due to operational and logistical challenges. The compressed schedule has disrupted the broader regional football calendar issued by the Sikkim Football Association (SFA), delaying the scheduled start of the SFA Senior Women’s League, B- Division league as well as the C-Division league.
Following the withdrawal of multiple participating teams, points were awarded according to league regulations, leaving only the top three sides in contention. Aakraman SC have completed their full schedule and sit atop the standings with 43 points. Sikkim Police FT (41 points) and Sikkim Brotherhood FC (40 points) sit second and third respectively, with both teams holding a game in hand.
The championship will now be decided on October 1 when Sikkim Brotherhood FC face Sikkim Police FT in the final fixture of the season. A draw between the two sides will hand the title to Aakraman SC. A victory for Sikkim Police FT will secure them the championship outright on total points, while a win for Sikkim Brotherhood FC would tie them with Aakraman SC on 43 points, sending the title to Brotherhood FC on goal difference.
