He'd quit smoking four times. Every time, he relapsed within three weeks. It wasn't a willpower problem. It was a hidden reward he never noticed.
I asked him one question: "What did smoking actually give you?" He paused for a long moment, then said, "It's the only break I let myself take all day." Not the ni****ne. The permission to pause. His brain wasn't sabotaging him — it was protecting something real, the only form of rest it had ever been allowed to have.
So instead of fighting the habit head-on, we gave him permission to take that same break without a cigarette attached to it. Same pause. Same relief. Different vehicle.
Behavior he couldn't break by force, he finally changed the moment he found what it was really for.
