Learning Football

One of the first things new football fans realise is that some of the biggest names in the sport are not players at all.

Managers in football matter a lot because they do far more than just watch from the sidelines. They shape the system, choose the starting lineup, decide substitutions, adjust tactics during the match, and often influence which players the club signs.

That is why names like Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola, and José Mourinho are spoken about with so much respect. They are remembered for building winning teams, defining eras, and changing how football is played.

Captains matter too, but their role is different. A captain leads the team on the pitch, represents the players, and helps maintain structure during big moments. The manager controls the bigger plan, while the captain becomes the leader inside it.

So the easiest way to understand it is this: in football, the manager is the architect and the captain is the on-field leader.

Which role do you think has more influence on a team’s success: the manager or the captain?

The most interesting parallel between MS Dhoni and Iker Casillas is not just that both were wicketkeeper and goalkeeper style leaders. It is that both became symbols of calm under pressure for an entire nation.

Dhoni led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy, a rare clean sweep of major ICC white-ball trophies as captain.

Casillas did something equally historic in football. As Spain captain, he lifted UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2012, leading one of the greatest international eras the sport has ever seen. He also built an elite club legacy with Real Madrid, including three UEFA Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.

That is why this comparison works so well. Both were not just stars. They were trust figures. In sports where pressure can destroy teams, they gave everyone around them belief, structure, and control.

So this is really a story about two captains from different sports who meant the same thing to their countries: when the moment got bigger, they got calmer.

Which other cricket and football legends do you think have surprisingly similar stories?

Day 10/60

Offside feels confusing only until you understand one thing: it is judged at the exact moment the pass is made, not when the ball is received.

A player can only be in an offside position if they are in the opponents’ half and nearer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent when their teammate plays the ball. That is why timing matters so much for strikers.

But even being in an offside position is not automatically a foul. It becomes an offence only if that player gets involved in the play, like receiving the pass, challenging an opponent, or affecting the goalkeeper.

There are also three simple exceptions that every new fan should remember: you cannot be offside directly from a goal kick, throw-in, or corner kick.

So the easiest way to remember the rule is this: football does not punish a player for running in behind, it only punishes them for being too far ahead too early and then becoming involved.

Ask all your doubts in the comments!

Day 9/60

A football match is not controlled by just one referee.

The referee is the main decision-maker on the pitch and has full authority to enforce the Laws of the Game. The two assistant referees help with offsides, ball in and out of play, and incidents the referee may not have seen clearly. But the final decision still belongs to the referee.

Then there is the fourth official, who handles substitutions, helps manage the technical areas, and shows the added time at the end of each half. This role matters much more than most new fans realise.

And unlike cricket’s DRS system, VAR is not something teams call for themselves. VAR automatically checks key match-changing situations and only steps in for a clear and obvious error or a serious missed incident. The referee still makes the final decision, even after reviewing the footage.

So the easiest way to think about football officiating is this: one referee leads, assistant referees support on the field, the fourth official manages the sidelines, and VAR helps from the video room.

Which football decision frustrates fans the most: offside calls, penalties, or VAR reviews?

India not qualifying for the World Cup is not a population problem. It is a football system problem.

A big country can produce millions of fans, but fans alone do not create a World Cup team. That takes academies, coaching, scouting, sports science, proper leagues, strong administration, and years of serious investment.

That is why a country can love football and still struggle internationally.

The painful part is that India has shown promise before. We have had periods where Indian football was respected in Asia. But without long term planning and consistent development, the gap only kept growing while the rest of the world moved faster.

So the real question is not whether India has talent. It clearly does.

The real question is whether India can finally build the structure that turns talent into results.

Do you think India can qualify for a FIFA World Cup in our lifetime?
