I don’t usually speak up like this. But silence is slowly becoming too expensive. This isn’t about taking sides. It’s about fairness. For the sports ecosystem. For gender equality. For honest storytelling. Because empowerment should never come at the cost of dignity.

A surprise gift for Parents 🤩

Mainstreaming the idea of sport for development.

Having worked in the field of sports, I've noticed the predominant focus being on commercial aspects and on-field performance in content shared on platforms like LinkedIn. While occasional acknowledgments of positive societal impact resulting from sport for development efforts surface, they are overshadowed by the dominant narrative of rapid commercialisation.

Now, I’m aware without commercialisation, we won’t get too far, yet I can't help but question if we might be sidelining a significant aspect of this industry. The distinctiveness of this field prompts consideration as to whether, amidst our pursuit of profit, we might be neglecting a vital role—using sports as a potential agent for societal change. Not waiting for this result to be a consequence of investing in the sport performance pyramid, but actively seeking change by using sport as a medium.

Consider this: How much attention do we give to ‘sport for development’ for the purpose of creating a better world, compared to its role as a high-performance driven, entertainment avenue and a driver of commerce?

How can we help make sport for development more mainstream so that it is not just a CSR activity or an afterthought, but becomes a core pillar of the growth trajectory of any sport? It does seem obvious but society should expect sport to be more than just a medium of entertaining us and while the majority will agree, few will give it the resources it needs. We can actively and consciously utilise its power for eliminating some systemic flaws of how the world functions today, and we need to recognize this, invest and work on it. The 'burden' shouldn't fall on one or two influential sports organisations or just foundations, but the entire industry.

Disclaimer: I have worked to commercialise sport in the past, will continue to do so in the present and future, but I would hope a more balanced approach can be attained with an active acknowledgement of its growth and potential to develop society.
