recently brought back a pair of Onitsuka Tigers from Japan and tried squatting in them because, in theory, flat soles should work well for leg day.
My experience was the exact opposite. The same squat somehow felt much heavier.
Then I switched back to my Nike Metcons and immediately understood why I keep coming back to them. The sole feels far more stable under load and I can focus on the lift instead of fighting the shoe.
So yes, flat soles matter. But for me, “flat” and “good for training” are clearly not the same thing. Metcons stay on leg day duty.
