The original phrase for mala is ‘Japa Mala’, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Garland’, is a string of prayer beads used by Hindus, Buddhist and some other religions for the spiritual practice called "Japa". In Christianity a mala is referred to as a rosary or prayer beads. Mala is usually made from 108 beads, though other numbers are also used for keeping counters etc. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a spiritual mantra or the names of a deity to invite or awaken certain energies and powers within oneself. It is believed that the whole universe came about with the combined power of a dot and sound energies, they were the starting points for the entire creation!
