אומנויות הלחימה סוחפות את המתאמנים בהן למסע ארוך, מרתק ומאתגר.
ככל שהמתאמן הינו ותיק ובדרגה גבוהה כך הוא נוכח לדעת ומפנים שרב הנסתר על הגלוי.
התובנה הזאת היא זו שגורמת לאדם להתמיד,להמשיך להתאמן, להשקיע, להתעניין, לחקור ולהתקדם ברזי השיטה.
הרי מיותר לציין שמתאמן ותיק ככל שיהיה המגיע לתובנה שהוא נחשף כבר לכל תעדר ממנו המוטיבציה לחקור, להתקדם ולהתמיד. הניצוץ בעיניו של המתאמן הוותיק הוא הגורם המניע
ומקדם אותו לעבר המטרה הנכספת- להיות מיומן ברמה המקצועית ולא פחות חשוב מכך להתנהג בדרך ארץ וכבוד כלפי כל גורם יהיה אשר יהיה.
דרך הארץ והכבוד הינן מידות הגונות העולות בכמה וכמה רמות מהמקצועיות והמקצוענות-אך בשום אופן אינן ראויות לשמש כחיפוי להאדרת אומן לחימה כזה או אחר.
למעשה התנהגות של חיפוי בשם הדרך ארץ הינה להחטיא את המטרה ולסמא את עיני הסוגדים לאותו אומן ולאלו הבאים להיחשף לחומר שונה.
זכור לי אחד הסמינרים בהם השתתפתי ובהם עם מאמני. באחת ההדגמות בחר אותו האומן בחור גדל מימדים (אם אינני טועה משקלו של הבחור היה כמעט פי שתיים ממשקלו של האומן) והטיל אותו לרצפה בטכניקה מסוימת, כלאחר יד. אני לא אשכח את המבטים שהחלפנו עם המאמן שלנו. מייד לאחר ההדגמה ניגשתי לאותו הבחור שהאומן בחר ושאלתי אותו באלו המילים:"אתה נפלת בגלל שהטכניקה הייתה יעילה ולא הצלחת לעמוד בפניה"? תשובתו השלילית של הבחור לא הפתיעה אותי:"אני נפלתי כי לא רציתי שיאמרו שהטכניקה נתקעה אצלי".
ראיתי לא מעט הדגמות דרמטיות ומופעי קסמים כאלו ואחרים בהן האוקה הינו יתר על המידה כחומר ביד היוצר של המדגים. ההדגמות הללו יצרו אצלי תחושה של בושה כעלבון לאינטליגנציה של המשתתפים והצופים באותן ההדגמות.לא פחות מכך ההדגמות הללו בעבעו בליבי רגשי בושה בשמה של אותה האישיות המדגימה אותן.
מסתמנת כאן בעיה חמורה. בעוד שהאומן בא להקנות למתאמנים כלים ועקרונות כאלו ואחרים המתאמנים מייחסים חשיבות לעקרונות כתורה מסיני במישור המבצעי, הטקטי והפרקטי ולא כך הדבר. אמרה פעם אומנית לחימה שהשתתפתי בסמינר שלה:"כשואלים אותי האם התרגילים של אייקידו שימושיים ברחוב? אני משיבה לשואלים מה שברחוב שייך לרחוב ומה שבאייקידו שייך לדוג'ו". האמירה הזו הדהדה בראשי זמן רב. בחלוף הזמן חדרה לתודעתי התובנה שהאומנות הינה הנדבך המרכזי ליישום פעולות במישור המבצעי-הטקטי-פרקטי.האומנות איננה מחליפה את המישור המבצעי-הטקטי-פרקטי. מבלי לבנות את היסודות האיתנים של בניין האומנות, המקצועיות והמקצוענות יהיו בלתי ניתנים להשגה.מקצועיות ומקצוענות ברי השגה הם - ברי השגה ודורשות אימונים סיזיפיים,עיבודו של החומר וניתוחו למשתנים והחשוב מכל ההתמדה.לכל הערכים הדרושים חייב להשתלב המימד הפרקטי שבלעדיו אותה האומנות לחימה עלולה להפוך ללא רלוונטית. אותה אומנות לחימה צריכה להשתמש ולתמוך בפריטים של אותה התרבות בה המתאמנים חיים. לראיה:"מה המשמעות של אימון בחרב אם בתרבות המערבית מזה שנים לא נלחמים עם חרבות"? Martial Arts have been practiced by human kind for centuries on end and are known to take its practitioners on a life long journey of self-improvement and discovery. The more one becomes proficient in one's chosen art, the more he discovers just how much he still has to learn and uncover. This realization is one of the main reasons why so many people continue to practice martial arts – delving deeper and deeper into their mysteries, peeling layer after the next- in search of the next finding. It goes without saying, that without this constant thirst for knowledge, one will not persist for long. One will simply reach a point when one feels that there is nothing new for him to learn. In such case, one will either quit martial arts completely or try to enrich his knowledge through another art. While martial arts come to teach self-defense, they also focus on instilling certain necessary values within their practitioners. This includes, but is not restricted to, respect, humility, self-discipline etc. One must note however, that while these values stand at the core of any marital art, they must not be falsely used to glorify the name of the Sensei (the teacher). This kind of behavior goes against the foundation on which martial arts are built – for it creates an inaccurate representation of the art in the eyes of both the newcomers and the inexperienced practitioners. I remember one such incident on a seminar I went to with my Sensei. In one of the demonstrations the visiting master chose one of the participants, who was twice his size. He demonstrated a throwing technique, tossing the other man to the ground with seemingly no effort. I will never forget the bewildered looks I exchanged with my Sensei. After the demonstration I approached the guy who took part in the technique and asked him whether the technique was as effective as it seemed from the side. The negative response came as no surprise: "I fell because I did not want to be the guy who interrupted the flow of the master" he said. This was not the only demonstration I witnessed throughout my years as a martial arts practitioner where the master performed seemingly flawless routines; manipulating his assistant with remarkable ease despite the apparent difference in size and strength. These demonstrations made me feel deeply ashamed for I perceived them as a direct insult to the intelligence of the participants and viewers, not to mention the shame and anger I felt towards the master who constantly uses unrealistic, eye dazzling techniques to draw more attention to himself and his art, while completely disregarding the real life applications of the techniques presented. This raises an issue one cannot overlook: in the eyes of the students the master is perceived as the ultimate authority, thus his teachings become "the law" which the students try to mimic to the best of their abilities. However, more often than not, these teachings prove to be inaccurate at best and completely misguided at worst, leaving the pupils unprepared for the potentially life threatening situations which they might encounter. A practitioner I once met, said: "When people ask me whether the techniques of Aikido are useful on the street, I always reply that what's in the street belongs to the street and that Aikido belongs in the Do Jo". Thinking a lot about this statement, I realized that the "art" is the corner stone of the marital art and without which, one cannot hope to attain the more tactical, street oriented and practical maneuvers. It is often believed that a student must choose between one and the other. However, in reality, the art does not replace the tactical maneuvers or vice versa, on the contrary, it comes to lay a solid foundation on which everything else can later be constructed. In order to achieve the desired level of proficiency, one must have immense perseverance, devoting many hours to repetitive work. One must constantly analyze the material, breaking it down into pieces and storing it in one's mind. One must continue to practice until the moves become second nature, thus allowing one to act without thinking while also understanding the reason and logic behind the techniques. It is also important to note, that in order for a specific system to be effective, it must remain relevant to the time and place where it is likely to be used. The art should take into account and support the culture and the environment where it is being used, or else it loses any value in the practical field. For example: while there are many benefits of learning to wield a traditional sword, in our modern society where swords have been replaced ages ago by fi****ms, on the practical-operational aspect such training provides very little value. ITS Aikido, or as it is known by its full name, Israeli Tactical Street Aikido, is a system that allows one to fully experience and benefit from the traditional Aikido values and techniques while at the same time putting a much needed emphasis on the practical, day to day application, thus allowing one to fully utilize this system both inside and outside of the Do Jo. This unique balance, allows one to enhance one's self defense abilities without compromising the traditional Aikido. In this system we emphasize diversity, allowing ourselves to draw from various fields in order to provide our practitioners with a diverse set of abilities which are extremely effective and applicable in our modern time. At the same time, we make sure to enrich our students, allowing them to attain a high level of understanding both in the theoretical and the practical fields. As a result, they are able to understand the reasoning behind each action they take. It is this understanding, along with the traditional values, that allows one to grow both as a martial artist and as a human being, providing one with the confidence needed to handle the many situations one might encounter in one's life. ITS Aikido combines ingenuity and innovativeness, while maintaining the traditional, classical values of its core arts. ITS Aikido is an Israeli system developed through the combination of several martial arts practiced by its creators for many years.
