Villa looked to book their place in the cup final against a very strong Hibs side, with a couple of key absences maybe proving decisive in the end.
The lads started brilliantly and controlled the game from the outset. Their reward came after 15 minutes when James unleashed a fantastic strike to put Villa ahead. Chances continued to come, but some excellent goalkeeping and a lack of fortune in front of goal meant the lead remained at 1-0 at the break.
The second half was fiercely contested, with both teams giving everything. Villa doubled their advantage through Gleidson after some excellent work, and there were further opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.
Time and again the woodwork, the Hibs goalkeeper and some rushed finishing denied the boys.
With seven minutes remaining, the game turned dramatically. Hibs capitalised on one of the many free kicks they had to scramble home from close range and, while Villa were still regrouping, they struck again down the right to level the game at 2-2.
To their credit, the boys responded positively and pushed hard for a winner, creating further chances only to be denied once more by some outstanding goalkeeping.
In heartbreaking fashion, the match was ultimately decided in the third minute of stoppage time. A free kick was awarded after the Villa goalkeeper was adjudged to have stepped outside his area before kicking the ball, and Hibs made no mistake with the resulting effort.
It was a hugely disappointing end to what has been a very good season for this group.
Congratulations to Hibs, and we wish them the very best against Southend in the final.
A huge thank you, as always, to the parents for their fantastic support throughout the year. The boys can be immensely proud of the progress and development they have shown over the course of the season, and while tonight's ending hurts, there is plenty for this group to look back on with pride.
