6 tips for finding your on- course confidence again.
This week has been a bit of a whirlwind back on the coaching tee, with lots of golfers sharing their trials and challenges they are experiencing on the golf course. Golfers have had a long lay- off and many seem to be varying states of panic about their games.
But there is hope! You have not lost it; it is just a temporary blip in form after a prolonged absence. The good news is that you can mitigate against these difficulties with these 6 helpful tips.
1. Focus on what you do well and attach emotion to these shots- celebrate internally, a personal high five so to speak.
2. Don’t give yourself a hard time when you play a poor shot, nobody died- you can and will hit more good shots in the future!
3. Modify your goals- after a long break you may take some time to get back on track. Take some easier course management options and use the clubs you feel most confident with.
4. Do not create a "narrative" around your bad shots, there doesn’t have to always be a story, you lifted your head etc, most of it is just a guess! After all, can we say with certainty why we hit our poor shots? I don’t think so!
5. Stick to a routine, focus on what the club is doing rather than your body is doing or alternatively have a good visual image of the shot you want to execute.
6. Leave your negative emotions at home! Label your shots, be factual and dispassionate about the results- if the shot goes to the right, then say that.
If you top the shot, then say I topped it Resist the urge to critique each poor shot and let go of what went wrong!
As coaches, we hate to see our students not enjoying their games and getting the most from what is a magnificent hobby. These simple but tangible steps are the practices tour players train to help with their performances, you should too!
