🔴⚫️ U10s finish Runners Up in 2026 Torro Cup.
Our MTAFC U10 boys headed to Torro FC on Sunday morning for the 2026 Torro Cup in what was their first taste of tournament football.
The weather was set fair, and Powderly Park was in excellent condition as 12 teams battled it out for honours. The format involved 15 minute mini games straight through with a very small break in between, so it was a fast paced event from the get go and energy levels were going to be tested.
The boys had a tough group but got off to a great start with a 3-1 victory over Johnstown FC .
From there we went straight into the stern challenge of Shelbourne FC U9s who as expected were excellently drilled and played with the speed and aggression of a DDSL club. In a game of few clear cut chances the boys earned a creditable 0-0 draw.
Next up was a match against one of the host teams, Torro FC Greens , and this proved to be a very difficult game as the home team came from a goal down to draw level and then created several great chances only to be thwarted by a brilliant goalkeeping performance by Luke, including an outstanding penalty save. We could have nicked it in the end but overall a 1-1 draw was a fair result.
On to the fourth game and it was Laytown FC who were the opposition. Fatigue was beginning to play a part and we lost 2-0 despite having a number of good chances ourselves. Such is the ebb and flow of tournament football.
We had to pick ourselves up and headed into the last game against the always strong Parkvilla FC, knowing a win was necessary to have any chance to progress to the Cup competition. The performance in this game was arguably our best of the day and the boys battled hard , created some good chances and eventually got a goal to win 1-0.
This was enough to put us into the semi finals of the Cup Tournament.
After a very short break we were straight into it and played the Torro FC Yellow team. Cont. In comments..
