Piltown Karate Club

Piltown Karate Club PKC is one of the oldest shotokan karate clubs in Ireland. Club Instructor Kathleen Byrne 6th Dan has been running Piltown Karate Club since 1981.

Located in South Kilkenny it's a great place to learn and enjoy the tradition, spirit and sport of karate with members young and old, 7 years upwards. With over 40 members from all ages and all abilities PKC at this moment have over 8 black belt members training regularly and new members are always very welcome in the club. Kathleen graded for all her Black Belts with the world renowned Soke Hirok

azu Kanazawa. She competed for many years both Nationally and Internationally, winning a bronze medal in Sardinia European Championships. She is a member of the SKIF Ireland Committee and also an International Referee C.

Shaun Steels Karate Journey started in South Africa. Shaun is an absolute pleasure to have in Piltown Karate Club. Below is Shauns Karate Journey to date in his own words. I started my karate journey with W.S.K.F at the beginning of 1993 in South Africa at the age of 14 and graded for my Yellow belt in May 1993 with Sensei Mike Ducasse , we then changed from W.S.K.F to JKA where I continued my training and graded under Sensei Norman Robinson and Sensei Malcolm Dorfman . I received a (HR) Highly Recommended for my Green 2 grading in 1994 . In 1996 my purple 2 was my last grading and my journey then came to an end. In 2016 we left South Africa and moved to Ireland , 33 years later I joined S.K.I.F Ireland with Sensei Kathleen in Piltown and continued my journey grading for my 3rd Kyu in 2025 and then after many years with the help and support from amazing people in the S.K.I.F I finally passed and received my Shodan ( 1st Dan ) in May 2026 . Karate becomes part of your life . Train hard and never give up but always remember

Breandán s Karate Journey to date. Breandán started training in Piltown Karate Club at the age of 5. He has trained consistently since then. Now at 16 years he is a 2nd Dan Black belt. He has competed as part of the SKIF Ireland National team on a number of occasions. First at age 12 in 2022, the European Championships in Netherlands where he got through 2 rounds of Kata, 2023 The World Championships in Hungary , 2025 The European Championships in Crete. This coming November Breandán will compete with SKIF IRELAND in the World Championships in Turkey. He is a wonderful young man, a great ambassador for Karate and for our club in Piltown. We wish him every success.
