What a privilege it was for Gowran AC to host two Athletics Ireland workshops over the past few weeks in Gowran Park driving range. Organized by Kilkenny/Carlow RDO Marcus Lawlor and delivered by Shane Aston, both the Javelin and Long Jump workshops were a rounding success. Coaches from over 15 clubs attended on both nights to gain valuable knowledge, coaching techniques and tips. A massive thank you to Marcus, Shane and all those who gave up their evenings to attend and broaden their coaching training. Thanks to Gowran Park and Gowran AC coaches for facilitating both evenings.

Weekend roundup
While our younger juveniles are enjoying the summer break, our seniors are out competing in various different events both at home and abroad. Martin Desgrandchamps was competing on home soil, running the Les Balcons De Saint Jean over the bank holiday weekend. Martin had an exceptional run across the French Alps, finishing the 29km course with 1500m to contend with in an incredible 5th place. Shay Kelleher is currently sitting in 6th position in the Munster Uphill League after 3 races so far, with more races to come over the next few weeks.
In Santry, two of our athletes competed in the National Masters over the weekend. Matt Ryan once again took on the 3000m steeplechase in the Men’s O40, winning bronze and setting a new PB on the day too. Matt took bronze in the high jump and long jump also. Marie Deegan competed in three events winning gold in triple jump, silver in 80mH, bronze and a new PB throw of 5.11m in the weight for distance.
Santry also hosted the National Leaguw Final on Sunday. For the first time in years, even decades maybe, Gowran had a team competing in the National League. The competition was undertaken by a small but mighty contingent competing in the Men’s Division 1 category, having secured their place back in June through the prelims. The team must compete in a minimum of 15 out of 21 track and field events, with the top 15 scores counting towards the final result. With some athletes unavailable on the day, the mammoth task fell to those who attending as they competed against larger urban clubs from all around Ireland. From our older juveniles to our masters, everyone gave it 100% on the day, with runners stepping in to throw, and throwers putting on the runners to step up on the track, it was a might effort from all. A massive thank you to Gearóid, Odhran, Noah, James, Darragh, Andrew, Matt and Eamon for their galant efforts and representing the club with pride throughout the whole day👏🏻👏🏻🔴⚪️

The Pink Rock
St. Joseph’s hosted the annual county 10k road race down in Rosbercon on Sunday morning. It was great to have two teams competing on the day and both collecting silverware. Our women’s team was the 2nd county team home with Orla Clear the first home, followed by Ann Brennan in 2nd, Kathryn Kennedy 3rd and Katie O’Brien in 4th. Joe Keohane was first home for the men’s and just outside the podium position in 4th in a great run, Karl Tobin 2nd, Marty Mosely 3rd and Matt Ryan 4th to make up the team for the bronze. Mick Walsh retained his O70 title on the day winning the age category again this year, fantastic running from everyone 👏🏻👏🏻🔴⚪️
Two of our juveniles, Robyn Goodwin and Adam Shortall, were chosen to represent the club on Sunday evening in Santry, as Athletics Ireland honoured the great Ciara Mageean with a 150m ‘Run with Ciara’ accompanied by lots of enthusiastic young athletes. The tribute was dedicated to Ciara who is recognised as one of Irelands greatest ever athletes and to showcase and thank her for her outstanding achievements in Irish athletic history.

IWA national Championships
Alex Donnellan was in flying throwing again on Saturday as she competed in the IWA national Championships in SETU Carlow. Alex came 🥇 Shot Put, 🥈Discus & 🥈Javelin. Alex also set new PB’s in both the discus and javelin. Great work Alex 👏🏻👏🏻🔴⚪️

National Championships
James Kelsey was in action in the U20 Decathlon in Santry over the weekend. Two days of running, jumping and throwing across 10 disciplines is a test of skills, and endurance which James took in his stride. James was leading after the first day having set a new PB in 100m sprint and Shot Put on day 1. James also set new PB’s in 110mH and discus on day 2, and led the competition going into the final event 1500m, with James gaining an incredible 617 points, to win gold with 5049 points in total to claim the U20 National Title. This is James’s 3rd National Medal this outdoor track & field season. Congrats James on this fantastic achievement, 👏🏻👏🏻🔴⚪️
