Thank you to Philip Deignan for his support as we continue on day four of our cycle from Mizen to Malin. It is fantastic to have the support of one of Ireland’s most successful cyclists. Philip is originally from Letterkenny and he raced at the highest level of the sport from 2005 to 2018. Renowned as a talented climber he built a career with AG2R Prévoyance, Cervélo TestTeam, RadioShack, UnitedHealthcare and Team Sky. Philip’s breakthrough came in 2009 when he won Stage 18 of the Vuelta a España in Ávila, becoming the first Irish rider in 17 years to win a stage of a Grand Tour. He went on to finish ninth overall in the Vuelta. Philip won the overall title at the 2013 Tour of the Gila. In 2014, Philip joined Team Sky and over five seasons, he played a vital support role for team leaders including Chris Froome, earning a reputation as a reliable mountain domestique in Grand Tours and major stage races. During his time with the team, he also recorded notable performances including third on a stage of the 2014 Giro d'Italia and second on a stage of the 2014 Tour de Suisse. Philip retired from professional cycling at the end of the 2018 season after a 14-year professional career. He remains one of Ireland's most accomplished road cyclists.
