Aikido, NUIGalway Aikido, An Important Martial Art An opponents body can be used against them in order to redirect an attack instead of facing it head-on.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art, but is different in the sense that, rather than using punches and kicks, participants use throws and pins in order to unbalance or restrain an attacker. To do so, participants use entering and turning techniques to redistribute an oppenents momentum, thus changing the direction of attack and in effect, the attack itself. At this point, the attacker then can be pin

ned and neutrilized. This practice was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) combining traditional jujutsu with weapons arts e.g. sword work, along with a philosophy of non-violence. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that people could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury, hence Aikido is often translated as "the Way of Harmony". Aikido training is mental as well as physical, emphasizing the ability to relax the mind and body even under the stress of dangerous situations.
