Outstanding Success for Fethard AC at Munster Masters Championships

Fethard AC athletes enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at the Munster Masters Track and Field Championships held at the MTU Arena in Cork, with the club bringing home an impressive haul of gold medals and a new Munster record.

The standout performance came from veteran athlete Noel Howley, who completed a remarkable hat-trick of gold medals in the Over 75 category and set a new Munster record in the 3000m.

Competing against some of the finest masters athletes in the country, including National, European and World Masters champions, Noel produced a series of outstanding performances throughout the day. He opened his campaign with victory in the 1500m, running strongly from the gun to claim gold in a time of 7:18.57.

Noel then turned his attention to the 3000m, a distance that suits him particularly well. In a highly competitive race against Geoff Stacey of St. Brendan’s AC and Sean Whelan of Ennis Track AC, Noel ran with determination and strength throughout. His winning time of 16:16 established a new Munster Over 75 record, breaking the previous mark by almost two minutes. Such was the quality of the race that both Stacey and Whelan also surpassed the former record.

Not content with two gold medals, Noel completed an incredible triple gold performance later in the day by winning the 800m. Showing tremendous resilience and endurance, he led the field home, rounding off a memorable day for the Fethard AC athlete.

There was further success for the club as John Laste claimed gold in the 5000m Walk, adding another Munster title to Fethard AC’s growing collection.

Meanwhile, Miceál McCormack also delivered an exceptional double-gold performance in the Over 75 category. Miceál won the 200m in a time of 59.53 seconds before securing his second title of the day in the Shot Put with a throw of 6.46 metres.

Congratulations to all three competitors on their outstanding successes and best wishes as they prepare for the National Masters Championships later this summer.

Last weekend saw the running of the Cork City Marathon, with two Fethard AC athletes taking on the challenge.

Paul Ryan, no stranger to long-distance racing and an experienced marathon runner, produced a strong performance to complete the course in an impressive time of 3:10:08.

Kevin Tobin was competing in his first marathon and put in a tremendous effort to cross the finish line in 4:07:50. Completing a first marathon is a significant achievement, and Kevin can be very proud of his performance.

Congratulations to both athletes on their excellent efforts 🔵⚫️

The 2026 Walls of Fethard 5km proved to be another outstanding success for Fethard AC, with fantastic numbers taking part, a brilliant atmosphere throughout the town, and perfect running conditions helping produce a host of superb performances and several course records.

From the first race numbers collected to the final refreshments served, the event showcased everything that is great about community athletics in Fethard. The continued growth of the race is a credit to everyone involved and reflects the hard work put in year after year by the club and volunteers.

Fethard AC would like to extend a sincere thank you to our main sponsors, Fethard Electrical Hardware and David O'Mahony Electrical, whose continued support is greatly appreciated and plays a huge role in making the event possible each year. We would also like to thank all the local businesses who generously sponsored spot prizes and category prizes. Your support of community athletics in Fethard is hugely valued.

A huge thank you also goes to our marshals who kept the route safe and encouraging for all participants, to Fethard Town Park for their support and facilities, to our hardworking committee for the months of preparation behind the scenes, and to our catering volunteers who looked after everyone so well afterwards. Events like this simply could not happen without the support and generosity of so many people.
Most importantly, well done to all of our own Fethard AC members who competed, volunteered and represented the club so proudly on the day.
