AM I TOO OLD TO START TAEKWON-DO? 🥋

Short answer: 'No.'

You don’t need to be young, flexible, super fit or have any martial arts experience to start.

Taekwon-Do can mean something different to everyone. Maybe you want to get fitter, become stronger, learn a new skill, build confidence, relieve stress or simply find something you enjoy doing each week.

And if competition interests you someday, that opportunity is there too — but it’s completely your choice.

You start where you are and progress at your own pace.

Congratulations to everyone who graded yesterday! 🥋

We’re so proud of all of our students, as well as everyone who joined us from Grand Master Douglas Taekwon-Do Schools. It was great to see everyone’s hard work and effort on display, and we hope you’re all delighted with your results.

A huge thank you to Grand Master Val Douglas, IX Degree, for taking the time to conduct our very first grading. Having your support and guidance meant a lot to us as a new club, and it made the day one we’ll always remember. We really appreciate you helping us through this important milestone.

Thank you as well to all of the parents, families, and friends who came along to support everyone. Your encouragement helped make the day even more special for our students.

A special happy birthday to Anton, who spent his birthday grading with us! 🎉 We hope you had a brilliant day.

Well done again to everyone. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see you all continue your Taekwon-Do journey.

A little behind the scenes as we prepare for tomorrow’s White Belt Grading. 🥋

Everything is set, and we’re looking forward to welcoming our students for a day they’ve been working hard towards. Tomorrow marks our first ever grading as a club, and it’s a milestone we’ll always remember.

🥋 We’re ready for tomorrow!

The hall is set, the mats are down, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to the Dún Laoghaire ITF Taekwon-Do White Belt Grading.

We are incredibly honoured to have Chief Examiner Grand Master Val Douglas IX Degree from Grand Master Douglas Taekwon-Do Schools leading our very first grading. Having Grand Master Douglas support and be part of this special occasion means so much to our club.

For a new start-up club like ours, this is a huge milestone—one we’ll never forget. It’s the beginning of many more to come.

To all of our white belts, trust your training, stay calm, and enjoy the experience. Your first grading is something you’ll remember for the rest of your Taekwon-Do journey.

At Dún Laoghaire ITF Taekwon-Do, we believe martial arts is about more than physical training—it’s about developing a calm, focused, and resilient mind.

That’s why every class begins and ends with 2 minutes of meditation.

Life is busy. We rush from work, sit in traffic, and carry the stresses of the day onto the mats. Before training, we take a moment to breathe, scan our bodies, and consciously let go of any tension we’ve built up. A relaxed body moves better, tires less easily, and is less prone to injury.

At the end of class, we do the same. We reflect on our training, relax our bodies once more, and leave feeling calmer than when we arrived.

When was the last time you intentionally sat in complete stillness?

No phone. No music. No distractions. Just you, your breath, and a quiet mind.

Sometimes, the strongest thing we can do isn’t move—it’s simply be still.

🥋 Our new rollout mats have arrived! 🎉

We’re really excited to bring these into the club. We chose rollout mats to give our students extra protection and a better training surface, helping everyone train with more confidence and comfort. While no mat can completely prevent injuries, every little bit helps, and we want to provide the best environment possible for our students.

I’ll also be sharing a video explaining:
✅ Why we chose rollout mats instead of traditional jigsaw mats
✅ The pros and cons of both
✅ What we’ve learned during the process
✅ Some advice for anyone thinking of buying mats for their own club

At our school, every Dobok (도복) we give to a student is personally washed, badged with the ITF HQ logo and our club crest, and ironed before it is handed over. It reminds us of the importance of the Dobok and the pride, respect, and responsibility that come with wearing it. Seeing our students wear it with confidence and dedication makes us proud every single day.

In ITF Taekwon-Do, the Dobok is more than just a uniform. The word is made up of:

• Do (도) = “the way” or “the path”
• Bok (복) = “clothing” or “uniform”

Together, Dobok means “clothing of the way.” It represents the journey of learning, discipline, and personal growth through Taekwon-Do.

When we put on our Dobok, we leave distractions behind and prepare ourselves mentally for training. It reminds us to focus, work hard, and follow the Tenets of Taekwon-Do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.

The Dobok also represents equality. Inside the dojang, everyone stands together as students, regardless of age, background, or status outside of training. We learn from one another, support each other, and grow together as one team.
