O’Neill’s Sports Legend Farrell bows out after 46-years

ONE of Ireland's great unsung sporting legends, Cormac Farrell of O'Neills Sports has hung up his jersey after 46 years work at the Walklinstown Avenue based firm.

By EAMON SCOTT

Leinster Football League President Tony O'Dowd made the journey to the Castle Arch Hotel in Trim today to present Cormac with an engraved decanter and set of whiskey glasses that read:
'THE LEGEND HAS RETIRED, CORMAC FARRELL'

Said O'Dowd: ''Cormac has been a real friend to the Leinster Football League for more years than I care to remember. He has always been an absolute gentleman to deal with and the league wanted to honour him and recognise how much he is appreciated.''

Added O'Dowd: ''O'Neills have sponsored leagues around the country along with the Leinster Football Association and it was only right and proper that his commitment was seen to be something that wasn't taken for granted. O'Neills Sportswear have given such great service to the game of association football and indeed the GAA and other sports that we were only too happy to travel down to Trim to make the presentation to Cormac in person.''

What started out as a small sports gear manufacturer in 1918, O'Neills has gone on to become a recognised worldwide brand that has branched out way beyond being the staple provider of club and county kit for GAA clubs.

Nowadays the O'Neills operation includes manufacturing facilities in Dublin and Strabane and carries many recognised brands under its wing.

The late Seamus Dalton was followed by Joe Edge paving the way for Farrell to take over the reins as Head of Sales and his tenure of office coincided with the massive expansion that is now O'Neills International.

The introdction of new digital based technology in fabric manufacture and printing facilited the arrival of stunning, ultra modern kits and all manufactured to the clients requirements

At one stage, O'Neills were the providers to both the FAI and the IRFU while they are long standing sponsors of the Leinster Football Association among others.

Cormac was the contact point with so many people involved in the game domestically and their sponsorship of intermediate, junior and schoolboy leagues would prove pivotal for the promotion and expansion of those leagues.

Many League of Ireland clubs wear O'Neills Sportswear kits while Bristol City, Wigan Athletic and Partick Thistle also don the iconic Irish brand on match days across channel while they also moved into Africa some years ago with a sponsorship of DR Congo.

While Cormac takes a well deserved break after close to half a century promoting the O'Neills brand, he is not one to rest too long and apart from his motorcrusier he is also planning a trip to undertake the Camino later in the year while there might also be a project or two in the pipeline. He will also have a bit more time to support his beloved Shelbourne FC and Liverpool FC.

Ivan Halpin is now in situ as O'Neills Sportwear Head of Sales and he follows in a great line of men who have made such an understated contribution to sport in Ireland. As an Irish brand they have given so much employment while also providing premium quality kit with first class customer service to back it all up.

We wish Cormac well in his 'retirement' and congraulate him on his stunning service to Ireland's leading sports manufacuring brand, the one and only O'Neills Sportswear.

Concluded Tony O'Dowd: "We cannot thank Cormac enough for all he has done for the Leinster Football League and to say we will miss him is an understatement and as Cormac retires, I just want to wish Ivan Halpin all the best as he takes over from the Great Man Himself.
