Louth Coaching & Games in conjunction with Dundalk Institute of Technology recently held an exhibition of the Social and Recreational GAA games Peil Abú (football) and Camán Abú (hurling) with the colleges International Students.
Camán Abú is effectively a non-contact ground Hurling game which is played with a modified hurl and sliotar. The big difference between Peil Abú and Gaelic Football is that players wear tags and a player who is tagged (caught in possession) has to hand over possession of the ball to the opposition.
Over the course of 3 consecutive weeks, the International students (male and female) took park in an introduction to Gaelic Games where by they learnt the necessary skills to take part in Peil and Camán Abú. In week 2 & 3 the same batch of student played a Peil Abú and Camán Abú Blitz held on the campus and supervised by Louth coaches Shane Lennon, Mairead Monahan and Declan Byrne.
In total some 50 International students of the college took park in the recreational games over the 3 weeks with a very positive response from participants who have derived a great sense of achievement, fun and enjoyment from their involvement. This event couldn’t have taken place without the help of Noreen Carney from the International Office at DkIT.
If a Club, College or Company is interested in getting involved, the proposed coordinator should contact Louth GAA Recreational GAA Games Co-ordinator Shane Lennon (0851418066) or Games Manager, Francie McMullen on (0873741984).
