Castlebridge Celtic FC rounded off their league campaign in spectacular fashion this Sunday, putting on a clinic at Celtic Park with a dominant 5-1 victory over Greenwood F.C. in the Murphy's Stout Cork AUL league. From the opening whistle, it was clear that our boys had come to play, implementing a high-pressing game plan that squeezed the life out of the visitors and forced them into errors throughout the ninety minutes.
The early pressure paid dividends when Dave Twomey stood over a corner, delivering a pinpoint ball to the back post that found Conor Twomey, who made no mistake in slotting home the opener. The momentum stayed firmly with the hosts, and soon after, they doubled their lead through a piece of pure direct precision. Goalkeeper Barry Sheehy spotted a gap in the Greenwood defense and launched a booming ball from his own area; C. Twomey latched onto it perfectly, showing great composure to finish the move from front to back.
Greenwood did manage to find a lifeline, rifling a shot back to bring the score to 2-1 and momentarily silencing the home crowd. However, C. Twomey was not to be denied his moment of glory. After a spell of sustained pressure, Jason Moorehouse produced a moment of individual brilliance, carving open the defense with an outrageous, outside-of-the-boot cross-field ball. C. Twomey rose to meet it, heading home to secure a magnificent hat-trick, (his second in 3 games!) and restore the two-goal cushion.
The Bridge continued to pour forward in the second half, with the hat-trick hero turning provider as C. Twomey squared a ball for Malik Hammed to finish from close range. Even as the clock ticked toward the 90th minute, the hunger of the squad was evident. In the 89th minute, showing incredible fitness levels for the final game of the season, the Bridge transitioned instantly from defending a corner to a lethal counter-attack. Kieran Barrett broke away and unselfishly set up Jordan Gordon-Harvey, who swept home the fifth to cap off a flawless afternoon.
The victory was the perfect backdrop for the post-match celebrations at Celtic Park. Gordon-Harvey’s late strike cements his position as the front-runner for the league’s Top Goalscorer award, a just reward for his clinical form all season.
After a season packed with positivity and real progress, our players can finally put the boots down and enjoy the break. The improvements week to week were clear to see – on the pitch, in training, and in the spirit around the club. Every player should be proud of the effort, commitment and character shown.
Thank you to everyone who pulled on the Bridge jersey this year. Rest up, recharge, and enjoy the summer.
Onwards and upwards for next season. Hon the Bridge!
