With Stephen Dillons’ passing on 21st May, he left behind his wife Elaine and their three small children, who need our support for the difficult times ahead.

With this in mind, we are organising this GoFundMe (all money raised goes directly to Elaine), and running alongside this fundraiser an event in Stephen’s memory ‘The Stiff Challenge’, to be held on Saturday 29 July 2023 in the beautiful surrounds of the Barrow Blueway Canal, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare.

Instead of charging a fee for each entry, we would suggest a donation of at least €25 per event participant to this GoFundMe, but any amount will be gratefully appreciated.
Your entry fee will be to show us your GoFundMe donation receipt (on paper or phone) when you arrive at the event. We will also have a donation bucket
available on the day for cash donations.

It will be a great opportunity for everyone to get together and either walk, run, cycle or kayak in memory of Stephen, whilst raising essential funds to help his family. We are aiming to have everyone finished by approximately 4pm so we can gather together in a local venue (to be confirmed) to celebrate Stephen’s life.

If you are not able to attend on the day, it would be great if you could do a walk/cycle/run/kayak for Stephen in your own county/country on the day, and post a photo to ‘A Stiff Challenge’ page.

MAIN EVENT DETAILS

Start point: Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. Park in Monasterevin town, Kildare (there is plenty of free parking on the main and side streets) and make your way to the Cycle path. Full map and meeting point details will be provided (check the updates here and on the page ‘A Stiff Challenge’). Kayakers can drop their boats to the Monasterevin Blueway Kayaking Club before they go and park.

There will be THREE routes, all running alongside the Barrow Blueway/Grand canal. All these routes can be done at a walk, run, cycle or in a canoe/kayak.

ROUTE 1: Monasterevin to the Wooden bridge and back = 6km (1-1.5 hours approx.)
Start time 2:30pm

ROUTE 2: Monasterevin to Fisherstown and back = 12km (2-3 hours approx.)
Start time 1pm

ROUTE 3: Monasterevin to Vicarstown and back = 22km (4-5 hours approx.)
Start time 11am

We are aiming to have everyone finished by approximately 4pm so we can gather together in a local venue (TBC) to celebrate Stephen’s life.

EVENT INFORMATION, TERMS AND CONDITIONS

WALKING/RUNNING/CYCLING
Meeting point on the Blueway Canal in Monasterevin. We will upload a detailed map shortly and there will be signage on the day directing you to the start time. 6km walk starts 2:30pm; 12km walk starts 1:00pm and 22km walk starts 11am.

The path is suitable for wheelchair/buggy use.

Please dress appropriately for the weather – as it is Ireland, sunscreen and a raincoat would be advised along with good walking footwear.

Cyclists provide their own bike and suitable safety gear.

If you are running or cycling, you will hopefully have an idea of how long each distance might take you, and you can start at the time that will get you to the finish at approximately 4pm for our get-together.

CANOE/KAYAK
Start times: 6km starts 2:30pm; 12km starts 1:00pm and 22km starts 11am. (We have based these times on average walking speed, so if you are likely to be faster, please gauge your time to aim to finish at 4pm approx.)

Kayakers may drop their boats to the Monasterevin Blueway Kayaking Club (can be found on Google Maps) before going to park their car.

We would advise you to use a sea kayak or similar. As this will be in a canal with no moving water, a river kayak will be slow, as you’ve no moving water.

Every one taking part must be self-sufficient in terms of their equipment and skill set to take part. Essential equipment to be carried: sun screen, rain coat, a charged phone (waterproofed), and a first aid kit. You must provide your own PPE.

We will NOT be providing kayaking safety cover so you must be paddling with peer groups of at least Level 2 Certificate.
Your equipment will be safety checked by an instructor before you enter the water, and you will not be allowed to participate in the event if not up to scratch.

For any further information please call Paul Ashmore on 087 6860976. (And keep an eye on ‘A Stiff Challenge’ FB page, which will be updated regularly).

Monasterevin to the wooden bridge and back = 6km

Monasterevin to Fisherstown and back = 12km

Monasterevin to Vicarstown and back = 22km

These routes can be completed by walking, cycling, canoe or kayak.

Parking will be in the town where ever you can find it, but its free. The kayakers can drop their boats to the Monasterevin Blueway kayaking club.

As we do not have a charity number this will be a donation into a bank account. We are hoping that each Adult would give €100 and each child under 12 €25 nad over 12 €50 or €200 for a family. We know that this is a large amount be we are also aware that bills still have to be paid.

It is also hoped that we will all meet up after for a good chat and a drink.
