“Observation creates inspiration” - Ben Aipa

From birds flying in the air to machines racing thru the water….Our dad had an amazing ability to take what he observed in the natural world around him and adapt what he saw to surfboard design.

In 1974 he went to a boat race on Oahu. He noticed there was a particular boat that was outperforming them all. The hydro-plane speed boat…

He noticed how quickly the boat accelerated thru turns and was astonished at the massive release of water that exploded thru the cut out section (wing) of the boats hull.

He instantly went straight to his shaping room. Grabbed a fresh blank and templated out a standard swallow tail short board with a slightly wider forward section. He then dropped the template inside of the outline and carved into the foam with his thumbnail the outline of the hydro-plane...
Inspired by what he saw, he worked around the clock building this first Sting. When Larry Bertlemann paddled out at a spot called Lighthouse in Diamond Head to test it out, Ben was walking back up the hill to watch him and saw how Larry was turning harder, sharper and faster than ever before. Ben remarked aloud to himself “Man..Larry is Stinging the waves!”. The STING was born. Our dad had no idea he was on the path to disrupt the current standard of performance surfing in a manner that had never been seen before with it’s influence seen in every winged board today.

Bloodline💪🏽
Hawaiian culture was severely undermined by the missionaries in the early 1800’s, a period in time where Hawaiians were discouraged from surfing and hula.

Surfing made a resurgence in 1890’s, which is when this photograph of our great, great, great grandfather was taken in Waikiki.
Commonly referred to as first ever photograph of a surfer, this timeless image depicts a proud Hawaiian man..proclaiming his ancestral right to surf. A revolution against the missionary machine.

To us, we see this photo of our ancestor as a statement: “Surfing and board building is in our Bloodline and no one can take that away.”

We are proud to build boards that represent our authentic heritage with modern progression.🤙🏽

It’s been 50 years since the birth of the STING and pictures like this still blow us away on how far ahead of the curve Ben was in surfboard design and how symbiotic the talent of the OG Team Aipa surfers , like Larry Bertlemann, blended into the explosive creation of high performance surfing.

A moment in time that will never happen again but we‘re still growing from today!

BUTTONS KALUHIOKALANI-HAWAII
“I try to surf as many types of waves as I can. In my surfing, I try to combine a lot of speed and maneuverability. Since the Aipa Sting is a very versatile design, it can work for me in any type of wave, with only a change in length, width and thickness.
In other words, I don’t have to keep changing types of board designs, only sizes, except for my longest winter board. I feel this helps my surfing, because I always know what to expect of my boards, as they are all basically the same.
In the summer, I ride a 5’10”, 21” wide Sting for small and fairly good-size waves. My longest summer board is a 6’5” 20” wide Sting. For the winter surf in Hawaii, my shortest board is a 6’10” 19¾’ wide Sting. For 8’ to 10’ surf, I ride a 7’4”, 19½” wide Sting. All these boards have a lot of “V” going one-third the board, and a slight roll to the belly, and they are all swallow tails, except for my 8’, 19½/“ wide pintail Sting. I need the pintail to get down into the bigger waves, and by adding the Sting to the pintail, it loosens the board up so that I can do the same kind of turns as I do on smaller waves. All my boards have been shaped and designed by Ben Aipa since 1972. Hawaiian surfers like Mark Liddell, Dane Kealoha, and Channon Valeho also use the same type of boards.”

The Butcher is a fearless, aggressive high-performance shortboard crafted to carve up waves of consequence with accuracy, designed for experienced surfers who thrive in challenging conditions. It consists of a combination of an aggressive nose rocker, moderate tail rocker with single concave under rear foot together and a pulled-in nose to give you complete control in steep and heavy pockets. This board has a balanced outline with the wide point moved back ½” to give you a back-footed sensation when you are putting all of your weight through your turns but still have enough forward-facing curve for drive. The rear flow of the outline is all about control and is perfectly complemented with an active thumb tail to have the sensation and control of a rounded pin but with the release out of the squash. The deep single with slight double impression between your fins will separate the flow of water and break up the lift when banked on rail and engage the single concave that flows out through the tail, making for proper dynamic rail surfing and explosive spray. The rails are lower apex, mid tapered to have instant control in critical take-off, and flow seamlessly from bottom turn to top turn.
