A skyscraper made entirely by coral. 🌿

This soft coral bommie has taken over what looks like part of a wreck structure in the background — a good reminder of how quickly Tulamben's underwater world reclaims anything that sinks. Give it a few decades and this is what happens: full coverage, resident fish, and a completely new ecosystem.

Shots like this are what make wreck diving here so different from a typical reef dive — history and biology, layered right on top of each other.

Yet another master of hide-and-seek. 🟢

At first glance this could easily pass for part of the reef — but tucked into the rock is a frogfish, using its warty, mottled skin to disappear completely against the coral and sponge around it. Every one you find looks completely different depending on where it's decided to blend in that day.

They're one of the trickiest critters to spot, but always worth the hunt once your eyes adjust to the reef.

Blending in, one grain of sand at a time. 🟦

This is a blue-spotted stingray, resting almost invisible on the sandy bottom. Their electric blue spots stand out up close, but from a distance that same coloring works as perfect camouflage against sand and rubble.

They spend much of their time buried or resting like this, using electroreceptors to sense prey hidden beneath the sand — a reminder that even calm-looking sandy patches can be full of life if you slow down and look.

This is what a healthy wreck sounds like — if wrecks could sound like anything. 🐠

Look closely and you'll spot dozens of species sharing this stretch of the USAT Liberty in Tulamben: damselfish, wrasses, fusiliers, and more, all going about their day above a hull that's now completely reclaimed by coral and sponges. It's wild to think this started as a WWII shipwreck and is now one of the most biodiverse dive sites in Bali.

Moments like this are exactly why the Liberty stays in our regular rotation — same wreck, different scene every time.

No, it's not made of marshmallow. 🌊

This is a sea star, hanging out on the reef with those signature chunky arms and pastel patchwork colors. What looks soft and squishy is actually covered in tiny calcium plates, and underneath each arm sits hundreds of tiny tube feet it uses to grip, move, and even pry open shells to feed.

Slow-moving and easy to miss if you're rushing past, but always worth a second look.

That "scary" open mouth? Just breathing. 😄

Meet the moray eel — poking its head out from the reef, mouth open, looking fierce. But that's not a threat display, it's just how they breathe, pumping water over their gills. Morays actually have poor eyesight and rely heavily on smell to hunt, which is why they spend so much time tucked into crevices like this one, waiting.

They're one of the most commonly spotted residents on our reefs — always in the cracks, always keeping watch.

Meet the scorpionfish — a master of camouflage that blends so perfectly into rubble and sand that most divers only spot it when their guide points it out. Their skin texture and coloring mimic the seafloor almost exactly, which is exactly how they like it.

They rely on that stillness for hunting, but their venomous spines are also why sharp buoyancy control matters on sites like this — you really don't want to put a hand down without looking first.

This is a school of batfish, cruising together along the reef wall like they own the place — and honestly, at this size and in these numbers, they kind of do. Their tall, flat bodies make them easy to spot even from a distance, drifting through the blue in loose formation.

Sightings like this are what make wall dives so rewarding — you never quite know how big the school will be until you're right there in the middle of it.

These are nudibranchs — sea slugs, but don't let that undersell them. There are thousands of species worldwide, each with wild patterns and colors, and spotting two together like this is a nice bonus on any muck dive.

They may be tiny, but they're one of the reasons underwater photographers love sites like this — endless macro life if you know where to look.
