Honest question for the over-40 crowd: is the barbell curl worth your gym time, or is it vanity work?
I'll argue it earns its place — with one condition. Every heavy thing you carry in a normal week — groceries in one trip, a suitcase up the stairs, a kid asleep in the car — is carried on bent arms. That's the strength a curl trains. The condition: the hips stay out of it. When the bar gets heavy and the hips start helping, momentum moves the weight, and you lose the one thing training after 40 depends on — knowing whether you're actually getting stronger.
The fix is simple: elbows pinned to your ribs, a weight that keeps your hips quiet, a controlled lower to a dead stop.
So — worth the time, or vanity work? Make your case in the comments.
