五人冰球賽早於1994年開始於香港舉辦，當時由於場地面積限制，把冰球傳統的六人賽制改為五人賽，故名為「五人冰球賽」。而自香港唯一達國際標準溜冰場Mega Ice落成後，這項國際賽事便在Mega Ice舉行，並回復傳統的六人賽制，而比賽名稱則維持「五人冰球賽」。2008年開始，「五人冰球賽」由Mega Ice主辦，更把賽事冠名為「Mega Ice五人冰球賽」。

The first ice hockey tournament in Hong Kong was organized in 1994. Due to the
limited size of the venues that was played in, it was necessary to reduce the number of players from the traditional 6 to 5 per team, hence

its name. Mega Ice, Hong Kong’s only international sized ice rink is capable of accommodating 6 players per team and therefore, the tournament reverted to the traditional 6 players format when it organized the Hockey 5’s for the first time in 2008.
