Musokan HK grading exam is made up of more than what most Dojos would include.
There are four parts in total, each carries a.different weight to the final score.
Students are expected to complete and pass a written exam prior to entering the final 審査 (shinsa).
During Shinsa, three categories, 侍礼法 (samurai etiquette), 木刀捌 (wooden sword skills and fitness), 英信流居合 (Eishin-ryu Iai) are examined. The higher dan candidates have to perform many more wazas during the Shinsa. (5th dan 10, 6th 20, 7th all 42) All candidates would also be randomly quizzed during the session on theory and philosophy relating to the techniques they perform.
Optional 真剣 for 3rd dan. Mandatory from 4th and above. They are of course tested on cutting skills, simple sword repair and maintenance as part of the pre-exam qualifying round.
The training process leading up to the final Shinsa is grueling, both to the students and the trainers.

We were invited to perform at a Japanese Martial Arts Festival today.
We formed our first performance team. Twelve of us headed out for the first time and we put on a fantastic show!
