In the face of real-world suffering, especially in the wake of the recent tragedy and devastating fire in Hong Kong, that label can feel painfully adequate. Yet in moments like these, football also reveals its deeper purpose: not as a distraction, but as a space for solidarity and remembrance.

Over the last week the local football community has come together to support the victims and everyone affected by the tragedy.

Ashley Westwood’s position as manager is untenable after Hong Kong failed to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup. He must do the honourable thing and resign — or he must be sacked.

HONG KONG STUMBLE BEFORE SINGAPORE TEST

A disappointing 1-1 draw against Cambodia at Hong Kong Stadium has raised questions about the team’s readiness for their crucial upcoming Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore.

The home side started decently, and were rewarded just after the half-hour mark when Wong Wai finished with a low shot to give Hong Kong the lead. However, the advantage was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Cambodia won a corner kick, and Kriya Sareth rose unmarked to head home the equalizer, exposing frailties in Hong Kong’s defensive setup and exposing Wang Zhenpeng’s age and lack of match practice.

The performance raises significant concerns with the decisive Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore just days away. An unresolved goalkeeper question, that has stirred additional insecurity; blatant gaps in defence that allowed Cambodia three breakaway gaol chances that could have let the evening end in a disaster; and a seemingly randomness when it comes to the team’s best starting XI. The inability to break down an opponent like Cambodia and the vulnerability to concede immediately after scoring are issues coach Ashley Westwood must address urgently.

The draw definitely halts the team’s positive momentum and will be a psychological blow, especially given Hong Kong’s historical dominance over Cambodia. With so much at stake against Singapore, this friendly was a missed opportunity to build confidence and refine tactics, leaving fans to hope for a swift and significant improvement on Tuesday.

The 2nd disappointment of the night was probably the attendance, which may have also served as reality check. Just 7,480 people showed up. Of course still a respectable figure, but one that would put certain low stake games still close to the capacity of Mong Kok Stadium. The novelty of Kai Tak Stadium also remains to be an important factor for the big turnout in the Asian Cup qualifying games.

Kitchee Edge Eastern with a 1-0 win in Season Opener

A brief but heavy rain shower cleared just before kickoff, setting a dramatic stage for the first match of the season on Friday night, 29 August 2025, at Mong Kok Stadium.

Kitchee seized control early, dominating possession and dictating the tempo. Their efforts paid off in the 36th minute when Cheng Chin Lung netted the season’s opening goal with precision.

Eastern struggled to find rhythm, especially in midfield, where their build-up play often faltered. Adrian posed a constant threat near the opposition box, while Kendy stood out with his sharp receiving and passing, serving as the engine of Kitchee’s attack. All of Kitchee’s foreign players featured in the match, except Yumemi.

In the second half, Eastern showed renewed energy, bolstered by several young substitutes. They carved out promising chances but lacked the finishing touch. Marcos Gondra’s curling free kick was expertly denied by Wang, and the Eastern captain’s thunderous strike rattled the crossbar—agonizingly close to an equalizer.

Despite Eastern’s late surge, Kitchee maintained composure and control, ultimately securing a 1–0 victory. The match drew a solid crowd of 2,706, reflecting the buzz surrounding the new season.

Key takeaway: Kitchee’s tactical discipline and clinical ex*****on proved decisive in a tightly contested opener.

Tottenham Hotspur claimed bragging rights in the first-ever overseas North London derby, defeating Arsenal 1-0 at Kai Tak Sports Park in a fiery pre-season clash.

A sellout crowd of 49,975—mostly Arsenal supporters—created an electric atmosphere. Despite the friendly label, the match had the intensity of a competitive fixture, with Spurs’ social media later mocking Arsenal with a jab about “adding another trophy” to their cabinet.

The lone goal came in first-half stoppage time, as Pape Matar Sarr capitalized on a disputed turnover. Arsenal argued Richarlison fouled Myles Lewis-Skelly in the buildup, but Sarr’s audacious 45-yard lob over an off-guard David Raya stood.
