MY PHILOSOPHY

Experienced Adventure Sports Coach & Educator

My role as a coach is to assist athletes in their whole-person development by training for and through their sport. By providing safe, enjoyable, and learning experiences the athletes will cultivate attitudes that influence their behaviors leading towards quality actions. I value respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence. Respect i

nvolves recognizing the dignity and rights of every person, all living beings, and the places we live. Integrity is being one’s genuine and authentic self and displaying behaviors and actions that are ethically sound. Compassion is demonstrating empathy for others and seeking ways to raise everyone up. Excellence is constant striving and seeking for quality in performance and actions without yielding. Coaching involves striving towards outcomes by focusing on attitudes, developing relationships, and learning skills. At the core of coaching is a positive relationship with an athlete. A quality coach demonstrates unconditional positive regard for all athletes. A coach needs to be athlete-centered, and they must seek a balance of who is driving the training. A coach needs to model the attitudes, behaviors, and actions that are expected and demanded of the athletes. All coaches are educators, and they embody and use elements of effective teaching and instruction.

I’ve added the Fourteen Carbon iSUP to the quiver of boards. I’ve had it out twice now where I started in some protected water, and then moved into some F4 gusting to F5 winds 💨 with 1-2’ chop 🌊. The board handled well into and across the wind and did fine catching some of the wind waves on the run.

Looking forward to getting it out in some different conditions along with trailing out the 3 piece carbon paddle that came with the set. The wheeled backpack that comes with is pretty sharp. Plenty of pockets and adjustment straps 🤩.

Spring is making way to summer and looking forward to more pleasant conditions out on the waterways. Testing out the Proto PFD and Emperor drysuit and Class 6 skirt on a day scoping out Port Renfrew.

In other news, I’ve upgraded my Instructor Trainer certification in sea kayaking to Level 4. A big shout out to for helping me through that process 🙏.

Stellar weekend at the inaugural Salish Sea Kayak Symposium! Forgot my camera 📸 and generally had my phone tucked away 🤣 so minimal shots. I suspect more videos and photos will be popping up soon 🤔.

It was great to connect with coaches and paddlers I’ve met over the years as well as make a bunch of new connections 🥳. We had an engaging and supportive group of folks come out, which makes it all the more worthwhile. Great times and company on and off the water.

Down in the southeast for a short personal trip and able to squeeze a quick run on the Chattooga with several laps on Bull Sluice. Also took some time to practice some rescues while in a warmer climate before returning to some snow melt rivers 🥶.

The Emperor drysuit did its job in keeping me comfortable while paddling, rolling, and rescue practice 🌊🤙.

The Emperor drysuit has arrived in time as whitewater season begins and the Salish Sea Kayak Symposium quickly approaches. Looking forward to trying out the new Class 6 spray deck in some surf and tide races 🌊. Never fun having your skirt implode 😭.

It seems that after any instructor course everyone’s brains are full of learnings and new ideas, and people end up with new paddling partners. There’s a lot of background work and on-going adjustments to make these courses successful. That goes beyond the trainers to include the instructor candidates, practice paddlers, and on occasion others coming in to observe.

This was the first course that on the final day, no one wanted to get off the water. There was a fun feature that could be run as a slot or small pour over, and everyone joined in from paddlers to trainers. There was laughter, enjoyment, and yes, some swims. That was the highlight for me, where the hierarchy of a course was flattened and everyone was having fun together. That’s why I continue to work in paddlesports education!
