For the past 5 years, the routine has felt the same (almost). The same weekly volume, the same intensity, the same timeline for bouncing back. But if we’re honest, it’s taking a bit longer to feel as fresh as we used to after a hard training session, ready for the next scheduled one. Suddenly, we’re feeling our age, but in glorious rebellion, we refuse to change anything. Because changing the training roster might force us to admit we’re hitting a decline.
Here’s the reality (supported by research): It’s recalibration in midlife.
Recovery capacity in midlife shifts because, well, biology changes naturally. Hormonal environment, systemic inflammation, gut health, and accumulated stress load all determine how quickly the body clears the damage training creates. When these shift, the same training produces a different physiological equation. Not less, not broken. Just different.
The ones who navigate this best aren’t the ones who train less. They’re the ones who train with the full picture, and adjust the inputs rather than lower the bar.
That’s the recalibration approach to adapting in midlife.
