My name is Emma Gomez and I will be a rising senior this year at West Carteret High School. As many of you know, seniors at West Carteret are required to complete a “Senior Project” of our choice in which we learn a new skill, or gain a new understanding on a topic. For my Senior Project, I have decided to do a soccer camp for young children in Guatemala. I was born in Guatemala and have played soccer since I was four years old, so I see this as an excellent opportunity to give back to my home country while sharing a sport I love. As you may have heard on the news lately, the situation for children in Central American countries such as Guatemala is not ideal, so a soccer camp would be a great way for them to enjoy being active. I have been in contact with a school called “Las Manos de Christine” and they have said they would be more than happy for me to come down and do a week long camp for as many children down there as I can accommodate. However, I need your help. I do not have the necessary means to fund my trip alone. I have already received tons of donated materials such as balls, shoes, and clothing for the children as well support from Seashore Soccer League. Additional contributions will go transporting the equipment and helping fund the construction of a retaining wall at the school which will be used to build a future playground. It is my hope that you will join with me to bring the game of soccer to children who it is normally not available to. Born an introvert, playing soccer has allowed me to become to the strong and confident leader that I am today. It is my goal to foster this passion of the game into the hearts of these young children, especially the girls who definitely will not have this opportunity again, and to allow myself to have a positive and meaningful impact on the world around me. If you have any further questions or would like to hear more about my project, please feel free to contact me anytime. I hope to hear from you soon.
