Lae City FC is thrilled to announce and congratulate our exceptional young talents who have been selected to represent the PNG Kapuls Under-19 Men’s Team at the upcoming OFC U-19 Men’s Championship Qualifying in the Cook Islands.⁣
From June 6th to 12th, 2026, the eyes of the nation will be on Rarotonga, and we are honored that the backbone of the national squad features the "Lae City" DNA.⁣

The transition of 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 from a stalwart defender to the technical lead of Lae City FC marks a significant chapter.⁣
His journey reflects a deep-rooted loyalty to Morobe football and a strategic evolution into coaching.⁣

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙔𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 (2008–2024)⁣
Valentine Nelson first established himself as a cornerstone of the Lae City defense during the club’s formative and most successful years.⁣
Joining during the club’s rise in the National Soccer League (NSL), Nelson was part of the defensive unit that secured multiple domestic titles. His composure and tactical reading of the game made him a natural leader on the pitch.⁣

𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.⁣
His domestic form earned him a spot with the Papua New Guinea Kapuls from 2010 - 2016, notably featuring in the 2016 OFC Nations Cup squad where PNG finished as runners-up. ⁣
After a lengthy tenure with Lae City, he moved to Morobe United FC in 2020, continuing to provide veteran leadership in the backline. ⁣

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨⁣.
Nelson's move into coaching was a calculated progression. By the 2023 season, he had already returned to Lae City FC in a technical capacity. ⁣
He served as an assistant coach, notably gaining attention for his tactical management during high-stakes matches, such as the 1-0 upset against Hekari United in mid-2025. During this period, he was credited with integrating a younger squad after the departure of several senior players and was appointed as assistant coach for the 🇵🇬PNG Development Mens Team Red at the MSG Cup 2025 in POM.⁣

For the 2026 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, Nelson has stepped into the coaching role again and is now working for his OFC Senior 'C' Licence Coaching Certificate. His familiarity with the club’s culture and his experience as a former player are seen as vital assets as the team prepares for both the domestic league and the OFC Men’s Champions League in August 2026.⁣
