*Rashford not a Kane replacement - ex United star*

Former United star Gary Pallister doesn't believe Marcus Rashford should play centre-forward for England in this summer's European Championships.

Pallister, speaking to SBK sportsbook, has questioned Rashford's ability to step in for Harry Kane:

"Gareth has used Rashford a lot in games and he trusts him. Southgate has got plenty of options in midfield and up front as well. I think there’s creativity and goals in the line up. I’m pleased with who Southgate has gone with and I don’t think there’s too many shocks there.

"The main worry is Harry Kane and his ankle problems that he’s had over the last two and three years. They keep seeming to resurface and if he’s not fit. There’s not another Harry Kane.

"Playing off the left is Rashford’s best position. He has not enjoyed playing on the right at Manchester United and I don’t think he looks the same player if he’s playing through the middle. I think his biggest threat comes off the left-hand side, but Sterling likes to play on the side as well.

"Marcus is a threat for England and the options are great; if someone is not at it you can throw the other players on there to change the game."

Manchester United's footballers have stepped up their preparations ahead of Euro 2020 this summer.

While, aside from Jesse Lingard, United's England contingent weren't involved in the 1-0 friendly victory over Austria on Wednesday, Paul Pogba and Daniel James started against each other in France's win over Wales.

Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay, meanwhile, were unused substitutes as Scotland and the Netherlands drew 2-2 and David de Gea could play for Spain tonight against Portugal.

Elsewhere, the transfer rumour mill continues ahead of the window opening on June 9.

United will reportedly face competition from Everton for Kieran Trippier and have also been linked with Lille full-back Zeki Celik.

Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has made it clear who he thinks United should sign this summer.

"They need to recruit well in this window in the right areas. I think they need a centre-back, a right-winger and maybe even a centre-forward," he told Goal.
