Match Report:
York Dukes 1–2 The Black Horse
The Black Horse made the trip to face the York Dukes in challenging conditions, with constant rain throughout the game leaving the pitch heavy and boggy and making fluid football difficult.
Despite the conditions, the Jolly Boys started brightly and got off to a flying start, creating several early opportunities that unfortunately went untaken. The Dukes responded with a couple of half chances of their own, but it was The Black Horse who struck first. Matty rifled a superb shot from outside the box that flew past the helpless keeper to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
Before half-time, The Black Horse continued to press. Col tested the Dukes’ keeper with a driven effort, while James came agonisingly close at the back post but couldn’t quite make contact. The teams went into the break with The Black Horse holding a narrow advantage.
At half-time, changes were made, with Tino replacing Col. Almost immediately from the restart, Tino was presented with a half chance, but his effort was dragged wide. As the rain continued, the pitch deteriorated further and the game became increasingly scrappy—conditions that began to suit the Dukes.
The Dukes enjoyed a strong spell and came close to equalising when the ball ricocheted around the edge of the box before a Dukes midfielder unleashed a fierce strike that looked destined for the top corner. Nicko produced a moment of brilliance, showing great athleticism to tip the ball wide in what was an outstanding save.
Momentum remained with the Dukes, and they eventually found their equaliser. A simple ball through midfield released the Dukes’ left winger, who went one-on-one with the keeper and finished calmly to make it 1–1.
The Black Horse showed real character after conceding and began to move the ball with confidence once again. Josh, who had put in a tireless performance across multiple positions, was moved to the right wing and became a constant threat. On one occasion, he broke through and squared the ball to Tino, whose spinning effort was saved before the Dukes cleared their lines.
Rich then delivered a perfect cross into the box, and Stampy rose like a salmon to meet it, only to see his powerful header fly just over the bar. Rich continued to grow in influence and terrorised the Dukes’ back line. After an excellent run down the left and a cut inside the box, a heavy challenge from a Dukes defender could easily have resulted in a penalty. However, the ball rolled kindly to Tino, who took one touch before smashing it into the roof of the net to restore The Black Horse’s lead with ten minutes remaining.
In the closing stages, The Black Horse pushed hard for a third goal and created several more chances, but none were converted. The visitors managed the final moments well and saw out the game to secure a deserved 2–1 away victory.
It was an excellent contest in difficult conditions, with both teams contributing to an entertaining match. Man of the Match was impossible to choose, as there were too many standout performances across the pitch.
