Manager Mez’s Post Match Thoughts…..

Saturday 21st February
Friendly Match
Rossett Vets FC v Hoole Wanderers FC
County Offices, Mannings Lane, Upton, CH2 4EU

“Firstly we hope Neil’s Mrs is on the mend & Dave G’s knee injury is not too bad? Jimmy Y, also realising some major treatment may be needed for his hip problem or some course of physio maybe!

We might not have had our strongest squad yesterday & coming up against a younger quicker Hoole Wanderers team it was a tough challenge.

We unfortunately found ourselves struggling to cope with the pace of say 5 very rapid players. And player manager Nodz spraying accurate passes short & long we found ourselves conceding goals early doors 3-0 down at half time! Once again maybe we didn’t get tight enough on their players, possibly too stretched, & without being too critical maybe giving the ball away too cheaply. No criticism of anyone , it just didn’t seem to work for us collectively first half! Although one definite positive was Andrew at right back going on to earn Man of the Match from all of us lads playing the full 90 minutes, well played Andrew & fully deserved! 👏👏

Sometimes we can’t explain why something works & sometimes it doesn’t but Captain Smithy switching Dave B & Jon F & Rob H on as second half sub we just seemed to get more control & Hoole started to struggle to contain us, definitely a game of two halves. Also Andy in goal second half, I think we could all see his all round solid goalkeeping game.

Make no mistake we believed we could do this, this was our biggest test! I’m not sure if they were all six yard box goals but Hoppo scoring gave us hope, the momentum had switched. His positional change to wide right, they couldn’t handle him! Alwyn to wide left, always remember you are all given license to play freely to do what is needed.

Jimmy Y coming on at wide left for a cameo role, providing quality forward passing & build up contributed to one of the goals. Alwyn scoring lifting us even higher, inspiring us further & Hoole we’re rocking as the pressure mounted. Rob’s probing runs & his passing & support led to him stabbing home from close range!

Unbelievable comeback with dominant forward play, but also a steady more compact defence as we turned the tide, relieving the constant pressure of the first half with a solid defensive display second half. Basically less pressure!

Well played everyone, absolutely brilliant & great camaraderie/atmosphere. A few of the lads deserve special mention, Andrew, Man of the Match, Dave B growing into the game show his quality, Rob H instantly gaining control, grabbing hold of the game, Andy in goal enjoying a clean sheet on his debut. And all of you for playing your part. Every game is a challenge & you certainly rose to the challenge today! Rob & Dave both older players maybe, but reminding us it’s not how fast you do it, it’s how well you do it!
👏👏

Big thanks to Jimmy Y for his management support!

Enjoy your weekend & thanks for continuing our unbeaten run & great comeback!”

Cheers
Manager Mez

Manager Mez’s Post Match Thoughts…..

Saturday 7th February
Friendly Match
St Anne’s Vets FC v Rossett Vets FC
Ellesmere Port College, Whitby Road, CH65 6EA

“With a strong team of Phil, Robbie, Smithy Arron & Jon. With a four four man midfield of Luke, Kev, Neil & Hoppo & two up top Lee & Steve H , with subs Jimmy G, Andrew & Steve J.

Playing against a decent quality St Anne’s team it was a ding d**g affair with end to end football with fast raiding football particularly from St Anne’s. They played direct going for it football with accuracy either through center mid or long balls to their front men. Taking the early lead but we managed to hang on for 3-3 at half time, with an up & over goal from Neil 😀 & two from Steve methinks 🤔.

With a couple of changes at half time we seemed to steady the ship. In particular Jimmy G providing a calmness, passing accurately to feet. But primarily holding his defensive position at the base of the center circle. Steve Jones coming on at wide right & nearly scoring on his debut! Lee Cousins putting the frustrations of the first half behind him to score two well taken goals. And as a team second half we got something like two proper lines of defence, men behind the ball. But to be fair to St Anne’s they never gave up & eventually pulled it back to 5-4.

A couple of lads deserve special mention, Smithy as Man of the Match, well done Smithy!👏👏 And Phil in goal pulling off numerous saves to keep us in it. Capped off with an age defying moment of brilliance in the closing minutes. Through on goal, at close quarters, the shoot out at OK Coral. Bottom corner strike, World class save, unbelievable Phil! 👏👏

Big thanks to Jimmy Y for doing a great job as referee, and Andrew as unused sub & subs Jon & Luke not got back on, in such a close game we had to get the win. Sometimes given match situations the team prioritises over individuals & ask for your understanding as a group.

To sum up, we weren’t exactly at our best but everyone rolled their sleeves up & worked together for a hard fought win. Maybe just slow down here & there, don’t rush so much, take care of the ball better. Concentrate on improving your passing accuracy/stats, how you can improve. We’re doing great lately but let’s keep our feet on the ground, keep grounded!

Try & remember sometimes we’re asked to play different roles it maybe either to accommodate others, try something different or just a learning curve. But nothing is set in concrete, adapt it as you see it. And I think you/we did that yesterday, ie Lee up top occupying three players second half, Hoppo & Steve dropping back, tucking in solidly, great stuff as a team, everyone doing what’s needed! 👏👏 Defensively, effectively a two man overload!

Enjoy your weekend lads & thanks for another great win!”

Cheers,
Manager Mez

Manager Mez’s Post Match Thoughts…..

Saturday 24th January
Friendly Match
Rockville Vets FC v Rossett Vets FC
Bidston Sports Centre, Valley Rd, Wallasey, CH41 7EJ

“With Robbie, Graham, Chris, Hoppo, & Kev not available from our last game’s squad you might think that’s too much quality to lose. But what a cracking game we had against Rockville, played in great spirit & not a bad tackle from either team.

Prematch we talked about building a pattern of play, the basics of passing to a player & getting it back etc. And I think we saw quite possibly our best passing game for a long time. Ten, twelve passes no problem, little triangles, with lots of good football played.

It would be too lengthy a report to go through every goal & move. But with Luke at wide right looking so confident & comfortable in build up play & delivering quality crosses into the box, scoring a goal, outstanding. That good in fact we brought him off at half time, subbed him 😁. Joking apart, fantastic Luke!

Then we had Action Man - Lee getting two giving us a 1-3 lead at half time, going on to score 4 goals & deservedly getting Man of the Match. I’m sure he’s a nightmare to play against, running them ragged. So much energy, imagine what he’ll be like when we get him fully fit 😀

A big mention to Steve, on from the start for the first time if memory serves me right & just giving a superb performance as our target man/hold up player. So composed with the ball at his feet, shielding correctly, they couldn’t get the ball off him, a masterclass!

Also a big mention to Neil, left back first half & left center mid second half. I think everyone can see what a quality player Neil is, added to that his blistering pace either going forward or recovery runs to sweep up etc.

Now everyone else might not get a mention this time but you all played your part, strongly backing up this week’s star performers. Well done to Andrew, recommended from the development squad 😁 & getting 45 minutes of valuable experience. With everyone encouraging each other, a tweak here & there to combat their threats, we ran out worthy winners. Thanks once again, BIG thanks to Jimmy, Smithy & all of you, please feel free to speak up if you have anything to say. We’re here to listen!

Yes, there were mistakes, we’ve all made them! And yes there are things we can improve on, but I think we’re getting there! We definitely need full squad for every game giving us real competition for places.”

Cheers,

Manager Mez
