Openrock S Earbuds: £72 (at time of writing) In general, I am a tolerant and relaxed person. Only a small list of fairly inconsequential things truly annoy me. But be assured that poor quality audio is somewhere near the top of it. Music played through phone speakers is the chief culprit. Poor quality earbuds masquerading as high-end tech come a close second....

He came to our attention yesterday, Stage 1, did Victor. Rubbing shoulders with Pogi and Jonas up at the pointy end. “Look at this French guy,” we said, vaguely recognising his name, chalking him down as one of those serial French losers, plucky but doomed, from a long line of losers. Riding for Team Cofidis, in the Tour, you are reminded once every fifteen minutes that your French team, gifted a place at the top table each year, has failed to win a stage since 2008....

Conflicted. Watching the climb of the Mur de Huy up to the finish line at La Fleche Wallonne, the second of the three Ardennes Classics for 2023, and I’m conflicted. Tadej Pogacar has won races with wild abandon already this season. At Paris Nice, the Ruta del Sol, the Tour of Flanders and Amstel Gold among others. Loveable kid off the bike, crushing the competition like some kind of tufty-haired super-hero on it....

As the race played out there was talk of time. The currency of a bike race. Seconds here, minutes between groups, this is the time, that was the moment. And in Tuscany, as we were, for another exqu…

Many of us first took a shine to diesel powered Belgian pro cyclist Tiesj Benoot when he won Strade Bianche back in 2018. The weather that day had turned the usually photogenic white gravel roads of that exquisitely pretty race into a mucky porridge. He'd entered the finish town of Siena alone and clear, and emerged into the hum of the town square blinking like a coal miner surfacing from a twelve-hour shift....

It’s February, and yes, there have technically been bike races to watch in recent weeks. But just because we can doesn’t mean we should. We’ve gazed blearily at the Tour Down Under wondering whether our skin can absorb vitamin D through a screen. We’ve had half an eye, at best, on San Juan, in Argentina. We’ve watched 180 of the finest athletes on the planet riding through a desert towards a line drawn across the road in chalk and wondered whether we oughtn’t be doing one or two jobs around the house (Saudi Tour...and yes, we ought)....

De Lie of the Land

Have you ever shaken hands with a farmer? Let me guess: Hands like buckets? Grip like a silverback gorilla? Your pathetic, non-farming fingers crushed like day-old breadsticks? There is no strength…
