Invented by Boredom: Three fathers—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—created the game in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, after failing to find badminton equipment for their kids.
The Name Mystery: While many believe it was named after the family dog, Pickles, who chased the ball, another story claims it was named by Joel’s wife, Joan, after the "pickle boat" in rowing (a boat with a mismatched crew), because the sport blended elements of different games.
