There won’t be an ETO session tonight. We’ll be meeting on Thursday evening instead for the usual Form&Fitness style session.
The 2nd “Power of The Mind” sessions.

Last week the club opted for, How Long is 20mins? A session inspired by my daughter and I counting to 60 twenty times to pass the last part of a car journey.

The ETO runners set off to run on trails at 10km pace, stopping when they thought 20mins had passed.
Without watches or phones.

The closest was only 30sec short. The furthest from the goal was 18mins. Incredible self timing/pacing.

Join us on Thursday for another session to help you get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Next week there will be two sessions: Tuesday Form&Fitness, Thursday 10km Trail Run.

London Marathon feels like a lifetime ago already.

1:1 coaching client George and I have been working together since September, with the aim of getting George around his first marathon under 3:45.

He only went and did it, with negative splits 🤯. We did so much work on pacing, and how George’s marathon pace felt intuitively without relying on the watch.
To say he nailed his first marathon would be an understatement. And raising thousands for Sue Ryder as well!

Here’s what George had to say about the process:

“Damian is a fabulous coach. He helped me smash my Half Marathon PB and complete my first marathon - London 2026. The training was incredibly well structured and varied, with flexibility to change things up if circumstances dictated, and with regular feedback to ensure we stay on track. More importantly though - he’s quite simply a super human being, obviously very knowledgeable about running but also incredibly generous with his time, friendly, and genuinely cares about your ‘journey’ whatever it is your training for.”

With another big city marathon on George’s wish list for next year, let’s see what we can do! 💪🙌🏃‍♂️

This Tuesday we’ll be doing the first session of a new block, inspired by ETO’s own members.
The Power of The Mind
(Getting comfortable, with being uncomfortable).

Some different takes on classic sessions to challenge the mindset as well as the body.
Why? Rarely does an event go perfectly to plan, quite often nor does life.

All with the usual warmup games, strength and great chat.

Great day out for ETO’ers at the Cotswold Maverick Race with club members taking part in distances from 15km up to 42km and a selection volunteering in various roles as well. It was a pleasure to hand out so many medals to happy finishers!

Particular credit needs to go to Honesty, a long time 1:1 coaching client, who improved her time compared to 2024 by 5mins!!

She’s a joy to work with, consistent, pragmatic and a quietly ferocious competitor.

If you were at the event today, from everyone at ETO, congrats!

Great event, tough day!

Getting the hay into the barn*
The analogy goes that once the hay is in the barn you can’t do anything more.

Apply that analogy to running and it fits the taper wonderfully. You’ve done your training, you can’t add fitness during a taper, but you can take away from it.

But what you can do during the taper to avoid the tantrums, twitchiness, anxiety and general “maranoia” to use a post London phrase, is… Plan.

I’ve got a race coming up and I’ve asked ETO members for their pre race organisational tips to keep you focussed on the big day in a productive way, rather than fretting.

No. 1, Don’t forget your bottles…

Read the blog and the tips via the ETO website: www.embracetheoutdoors.net

*In the broadest sense, a barn. Suspend the reality of it being full of vehicles, being the wrong type of barn and we should be fine.
